BRADY SMITH TOPS
PROCTOR LATE MODEL FEATURE
By

Proctor,
Minnesota-Brady
Smith of Solon Springs WI started the 20 lap WISSOTA Late
Model feature from the inside of row four and got by
leader Jeff Provinzino in turn two just past half way. The
track was quite slick but was very raceable. "The
track was great tonight" a jubilant Smith said in
victorylane "there were two grooves out there".
Harry Hanson and Steve Roseen finished in the top three
after Provinzino spun in turn four while trying to regain
the lead and pulled into the pits fora 17th place finish.
At
the initial start outside pole sitter Provinzino grabbed
the lead followed by Harry Hanson and pole sitter Steve
Roseen. With one lap in there was an incident in turn four
involving Don Copp who was sent to the rear. At the green
flag Provinzino again took to the high side with Hanson,
Roseen, Kevin Carlson and Bob Reed trailing. The caution
flag flew once again when Nick Nelson slipped off turn
four. At the
green Provinzino again took to the point with Hanson
closing in. An
uncharacteristic third caution flag appeared when Carlson
went off turn three. At the green Provinzino again took
the lead with Hanson hanging to the inside. The fourth and
final caution period ensued soon thereafter when John
Massingill and Paul Wrazidlo tangled in turn three. When
racing resumed Provinzino led Hanson, Roseen, Smith and
Reed as 16th starting Tim McMann cracked the top ten.
At
the half way point it was Provinzino, Hanson, Smith,
Roseen, Reed, Darrell Nelson, Steve Vesel, McMann, Jeff
Broking and Clint Larson in the top ten. Shortly
past the mid point after Smith had moved to third, he and
Hanson got a run on Provinzino on the low side as the
bottom groove began to come in, and they slipped past with
Smith grabbing the point. .Provinzino
spun while trying to regain the lead and pulled into the
pits as the final caution flag flew. At
this point, Reed also suffered a break down and was towed
to the pit area. With Reed gone Darrell Nelson moved into
fourth while McMann had moved to fifth. Smith went on to
take the win over Hanson, Roseen, Nelson and McMann.
Jeff
Hart took the lead in the 17 car 15 lap Modified main
event from the pole over Kelly Estey, Jeff Lien, Darrell
Nelson and Jody Olson at the outset but a spin in turn
three slowed the action. When
racing resumed Hart again assumed the lead but over drove
turn one sliding off the top and rejoining the pack in
11th place. Estey led over Nelson, Olson, Steve Arpin and
Lien. The
caution flag again appeared when Ken Hron spun in turn two
collecting Darrell Carlson. At the green, Nelson swiped
the lead from Estey as Lien slipped on the restart letting
Rick Cannata into fifth.
At
the half way mark it was Nelson, Estey, Olson, Arpin and
Cannata in the top five but Cannata spun shortly
thereafter bringing out the final caution flag. The
restart saw Estey dive to the inside of Nelson but it
would not stick as Nelson went on to take the win over
Estey, Arpin, Olson and Hart. "I like to race with
Kelly" Nelson said "we never rubbed or nothin',
it's great racin' with guys like him."
It
was a race of bad luck and strong drives as 22 Super
Stocks took to the track for their feature event.
Mike
Bellefeuille shot into
the lead from the pole but outside pole sitter spun in
turn four earning a trip to the rear. At the restart Scott
Lawrence and Jay Kuras got together which flattened a tire
on
Lawrence
’s #77. He
went to the pits for a new tire and Kuras was sent to the
back. Lawrence and Kuras started in the back at the green
but the caution flag flew right away when Rob Cooper,
Jeremy Snow and Kevin Salin tangled in the second turn.
During a lengthy delay leader Bellefeuille's #21
overheated and he was pushed to the pits. This left the
lead on the restart to Jeff Forseen over John Copp, Eric
Nelson, George Mattson and Keith Kern. Copp
grabbed the point with Mattson slipping past Forseen to
second while Lawrence and Kuras cracked the top ten. At
the half way point it was Copp, Mattson, Forseen and
Nelson in the top five. Copp held off Mattson the rest of
the way for the win while
Lawrence
finished third, Kuras
fourth and Forseen fifth.
Seventeen
cars answered the call for the Midwest Modified main
event. Outside pole sitter Mark Anderson took the lead
through three caution periods and pulled away from the
winner of the last Midwest Modified feature, Troy
Jordan
, to take the win. Duane
Dunbar made the long tow from Marenesco
Michigan
worthwhile as he
finished third ahead of Tyler Hynnes and Greg Carlson. "I
broke a rocker arm in that heat race" he said in the
victory lane interview "
I had a bit of help just getting it out here".
The
19 car Pure Stock feature was won by Todd Monahan who put
the #14 out in front at the green flag and survived a
couple of caution periods to take the win over Jody
Amendola, Rick Wilhelm, and Nick Lavato, who came from the
12th starting spot, and Jim McClellan.
