NELSON DOUBLES UP AGAIN AT PROCTOR

By Jerry O'Brien 6-22-03

Hermantown Minnesota's Darrell Nelson has got his rivals at the Proctor Speedway seeing double this season.  For the second consecutive Sunday Nelson has won both the WISSOTA Late Model and Modified features.  The rest of the program was won by Mother Nature as a brief heavy shower soaked the race track five laps into the Super Stock feature.

As Nelson said in the post race interview after the Modified main event, "The draw is so important because the cars are so close".  This premise was born out when Nelson drew the outside of the front row in both events.

At the green flag, in the 20 lap Late Model, feature Nelson shot into the lead with pole sitter Tim McMann, Jeff Provinzino, Clint Larson, and Harry Hanson following.  As Nelson streaked away the battle for fifth was joined between Hanson, Don Copp and Larson.  Nelson had a ten car-length lead over McMann.  Copp grabbed fourth as Hanson and Larson continued to battle him.

At the half way point, Nelson was in a different zip code closing on the rear of the field.  Provinzino maintained third as the fourth place battle was the one to watch.  Larson was desperately hanging on to fourth but couldn't stave off Hanson as the checkered flag flew.  The final top five finish was Nelson, McMann, Provinzino, Hanson, and Larson.

Nelson led from the get go in the WISSOTA Modified feature which, unlike the Late Model main which went caution free, would see four caution periods.

Nelson led pole sitter Scott Schultie from the green flag over Cory Jorgenson, Jeff Hart, and Duane Dale.  With a single circuit in Tony Lund spun in turn one creating the first caution period.  It was a single file restart which turned into a no start as newcomer Jamie Davis spun in turn two.  The next try was a good one and Nelson scooted away from Schultie who was trying to hold off Hart and Dale.

A couple of circuits later the caution flag moved over to turn three when another newcomer, Ken Anderson, stalled at the top of the corner.  The restart was right at the half way point of the 15 lap event and, at the green, while Nelson resumed his quest for the checkered flag, Schultie was passed for second by Hart with Jorgenson to fifth.

The battle for fifth was a tight one and the almost inevitable occured when Jorgenson, Dale, Steve Arpin and Dave Lear tangled.  Jorgenson was charged with the incident and sent to the rear.

At the green Arpin took the third spot but the caution flag quickly appeared when he slid off the top of the first turn and was sent to the rear. Up to this point, there had been a great deal of shuffling occurring further back in the field and Jayme Lautigar, who had started eighth, had worked his way to fourth with the help of some attrition while Jason Miller had come from 17th to crack the top five.

After the green flag, to start what would be the final run to the finish, Miller took fourth as Schultie slid off turn four and rejoined the field in ninth a spot he would lose to Tommy Turcotte who had started last in the 21 car field.

Nelson had little trouble taking the win leading every lap.  Hart, a flying Kelly Estey up from the 11th starting spot to third, Miller and Lautigar.

With five tough caution filled laps finished in the Super Stock feature with Johnny Erickson leading Jay Kuras, Scott Lawrence and pole sitter Spike McDougall, a brief heavy rain shower soaked the speedway causing officials to cancel the rest of the program which will résumé next Sunday with the final ten laps of the Super Stock feature.  The Midwest Modified and Pure Stock features will be run at a date to be named.
