SMITH DOMINATES SECOND LEG OF AMSOIL SERIES
16 Year Old Kyle Peterlin Wins First Career WISSOTA Super Stock
Feature
By Jerry O'Brien
Proctor, MN - 2001 AMSOIL Series
Champion Brady Smith of
Solon Springs
,
WI
dominated the 35 lap WISSOTA Late Model feature at the Proctor
Speedway Tuesday night.
Smith started from the outside of the
second row and, after wrestling the lead away from Steve
Laursen, he proceeded to run away and hide. By
lap 21 he had lapped 12 cars or half the field.
As the 25 car field took the green flag
under threatening skies, pole sitter Steve Laursen grabbed the
point but outside pole sitter Todd Gehl took over the next time
by as Smith was third and Steve Vesel fourth.
Bill Byholm and Jeff Provinzino waged a wheel to wheel
battle for fifth. Gehl
suddenly slowed across the back stretch and was able to limp
around to the pits. Smith
was then into second and then slipped past Laursen into the
lead. Once he got
out front he quickly opened up a huge lead and began to lap the
field. Laursen was
losing ground to Smith but had, in turn, a big margin over the
third place battle that involved Provinzino, Byholm and Darrell
Nelson.
As the action up front became more
hectic, defending champion and current point leader Joel
Cryderman was working his way forward from the outside of the
8th row and was in 9th. Pat
Doar was also moving forward and hit the top five in fifth.
The battle for third resolved itself at
the half way point with Nelson in third ahead of Provinzino,
Doar and 13th starting Rick Egersdorf into the top five. Cryderman
continued his march forward capturing two more spots to 7th.
At lap21 the caution flag flew when
Terry Lillo spun in turn two. This
brought the field back to Smith's bumper but to no avail.
At the green Smith again showed his
superiority by again pulling out to a huge lead and was again in
traffic within a couple laps. Nelson
tried to take second from Laursen but couldn't pull off the
pass. Cryderman
picked up another spot at this point and was just outside the
top five. Egersdorf
got by a slowing Doar into fourth as Doar pulled off to a
disappointing 20th place finish. The
final caution flew when Jon Chrest slipped sideways in front of
Smith who couldn't avoid tapping him sending the #84 around.
With four laps to go Laursen was again
on Smith's bumper but did not have anything for him as Smith led
the rest of the way to the checkered flag. Laursen,
Egersdsorf, Nelson and Cryderman rounded out the top five.
Kyle Peterlin won his first career
WISSOTA Super Stock feature in convincing fashion starting from
the outside of the front row and leading all 20 circuits for a
sweep. Johnny
Erickson came home in second ahead of former National Champion
Don Eichens who had fought his way forward from 16th.
Mike
Bellefeuille and Jeff Tardy rounded out the top five.
Attrition was high in the event as only nine of 20 starters were
running at the finish.
