SIMPSON WINS FIRST SUPER STOCK MAIN EVENT
McMann Repeats Late Model Win
by Jerry O'Brien
July 6, 2003
Proctor, MN - Rick Simpson of
Thunder Bay
Ontario
won his first career Super Stock feature at the Proctor Speedway
Sunday night July 6th. Darrell
Nelson grabbed the WISSOTA Modified feature win while Tim McMann
won his second consecutive WISSOTA
Late Model main event and Mark Anderson picked up his second
WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature of the season. Two laps into
the Pure Stock feature Mother Nature stepped in and rained out
the rest of the event.
Tim McMann won the all important redraw for
the WISSOTA Late Model feature starting on the pole and
streaking away at the green flag to the lead but it was a no go
as Jeff Broking tapped Harry Hanson sending both spinning and
collecting Kevin Carlson. The
result was the same for the next try as McMann again vaulted to
the lead with Steve Vesel, John Massingill, Justin Aylward and
Paul Wrazidlo trailing. Once again the caution flag flew as
Broking and Carlson again tangled in turn one putting both out
of action.
The third time was the charm and a single
file start with McMann still in charge over Vesel while Aylward,
Massingill and Don Copp were in a tussle for third. Copp
showed some power and took third pulling away to join Vesel and
McMann on a break away from the pack. The
mid point was quickly reached with McMann extending his lead
over Vesel while Copp began to creep forward overhauling Vesel
for second. Moving
forward also was Darrell Nelson sliding into fourth but Hanson
was charging back from the early incident to take fifth, as the
white flag flew Nelson and Hanson were wheel to wheel for fourth
while Copp tried unsuccessfully to wrest second from Vesel. McMann
won his second feature at the speedway in as many weeks. Heats
were won by Copp and Nelson.
Darrell Nelson started the WISSOTA Modified
feature from the outside of the front row and took the early
lead but Duane Dale spun in turn one setting up a restart with
no laps in. At the
green flag Nelson again took the point followed by Jeff Hart,
Steve Arpin and Jeff Wood while Kelly Estey rode the track
bottom dueling with Matt Sorenson for fifth. The battle up front
was intense as Nelson was hounded by Arpin, Hart and Wood. As
the half way point was quickly reached Hart made a bid for the
lead but that let Arpin through to second. Arpin
then made a bid for the lead himself but spun in turn one and
was sent to the rear for causing the caution flag. Hart
limped to the pits with a flat.
It looked as though Hart was not going to
be able to return as the green flag flew but Jason Miller's run
was ruined with a spin in turn three halting the action and
letting Hart return to rebound to an eighth place finish. This
chain of events left Nelson with a big lead and Wood trying to
stave off Estey. They
traded slide jobs on the final circuit with Estey besting Wood
for second behind Nelson. Joey
Jensen came almost unnoticed from the 11th starting
slot to finish fourth while Duane Dale rounded out the top five.
Rick Simpson also made the most of his
redraw as he started the Super Stock Main from the pole flanked
by Jay Kuras. Kuras
bolted to the lead mindful of his aborted win the previous week
and led Simpson, Nick Musel, Jim Campbell and Keith Kern early
on. On the move from
tenth was Scott Lawrence who quickly worked his way to fifth.
Lawrence
moved to fourth as Ryan Aho and
Campbell
battled for fifth.
At the half way point reached with no
caution flags Kuras still led Simpson while Musel and Lawrence
skirmished for third. Simpson dropped to the low groove and went
wheel to wheel with Kuras for the lead while close behind
Lawrence and Musel were also door to door.
Campbell
suffered mechanical problems and dropped back as Simpson forged
ahead of Kuras into the lead. Musel experienced problems also
and dropped back as the white flag flew. Lawrence and a surging
Aho blew by Kuras to finish second and third respectively, while
Kyle Peterlin finished fifth after starting 13th.
Mark Anderson led every lap in the Midwest
Modified feature after starting from the outside of the front
row. Early on Josh
Loucks, Jody Bellefeuille, Justin Jones and JJ Thompson ran top
five.
Anderson
held a big lead on Bellefeuille while Dick Peterson had moved
from tenth to fifth. At
the half way point with Anderson leading and Peterson up to
third, Peterson spun on his own in turn two and was sent to the
rear.
Anderson
still led Bellefeuille but now it was Jones and Mark Kangas in
third and fourth and Thompson hanging onto fifth. Thompson
got by Kangas and then Jones to finish third while Kangas
followed through to fourth.
Anderson
won feature number two for the season at the
Speedway
.
The Pure Stock feature experienced it's
first caution flag two laps in and the red flag shortly
thereafter as a rain storm hit the area washing out the rest of
the feature.
