PROVINZINO WINS PROCTOR SPEEDWAY LATE MODEL MAIN
By Jerry O'Brien
Proctor, MN - Jeff Provinzino of Hibbing, MN won
the WISSOTA Late Model feature Sunday night at the Proctor
Speedway. Other
winners were Mike Bellefeuille, Super Stock, Darrell Nelson,
Modified, Justin Jones, Midwest Modified and J P Aase, Pure
Stock. Gary
Campbell was the make up feature winner in the Pure Stock
Division.
Outside pole sitter John Massingill took
the early lead in the Late Model main with Lou Cianni,
Provinzino, Harry Hanson and Tim McMann trailing.
Provinzino shot into second as Hanson took third.
Massingill, Provinzino and Hanson began to pull away from
the pack but Nick Nelson stalled in turn four bringing out the
caution and closing the field back up.
Provinzino grabbed the lead at the restart
but Jeff broking broke in the first turn and spun bringing out
the caution again. At
this point it was Massingill back to the lead but Provinzino
regained it quickly. Massingill
and Hanson battled for second with Hanson finally gaining the
upper hand.
At the midpoint Provinzino had widened his
lead while Hanson, Massingill, McMann and Darrell Nelson
completed the top five. Nelson
had won a duel with Don Copp to secure fifth.
Hanson and Massingill continued their skirmish for second
to the checkered flag with Hanson finishing second to Provinzino.
McMann and Nelson rounded out the top five.
The WISSOTA Modified feature turned into a
race of attrition as only five of 18 starters were running at
the finish of 15 laps. A huge tangle in turn four at the back of
the field put three cars out and at the same time an incident
after the yellow flag left contender Jason Miller out with major
rear suspension damage. Darrell
Nelson led pole sitter Duane Dale along with Ken Hron and Jeff
Hart but a caution flag flew when Cory Jorgenson spun Kelly
Estey and was sent to the pits.
Only a couple laps were recorded after the restart when
Jodi Olson spun in turn one and was out of contention.
Matt Sorenson left the track and then there were seven.
Two of the cars that were originally in the first lap tangle
were still running and would finish fourth and sixth. Nelson
went on to the win over Estey, Dale, Jason Anderson, Jeff Hart
who did not finish but still finished ahead of the still running
Dennis Checkalski who was some laps down.
The Super Stock feature by contrast with
other divisions, went flag to flag without a caution period.
Kyle Peterlin and Joe Oliver led the 20-car field to the green
flag with Peterlin taking the early lead. Mike
Bellefeuille came up to challenge moving past Oliver to second. Ryan
Aho was on the move into the top five as up front Bellefeuille
took the lead while Oliver battled Jay Kuras. The mid point of
the event was quickly reached with Bellefeuille leading Peterlin,
Oliver, Aho and Kuras. Moving
up from the fifth row was Scott Lawrence into the top five. Peterlin
faltered and dropped out with mechanical problems as Aho moved
to second and Lawrence to third. Oliver
finished fourth and Bobby Carlson rounded out the top five.
Justin Jones was the winner of the 15-lap
Midwest Modified feature with a strong run from the sixth
starting spot. Outside
pole sitter Darren Brown held the early lead with Jody
Bellefeuille quickly to second then to the lead but a Mark
Kangas spin off turn four halted the action.
Jones was on the move and moved to the top five inside of
Greg Carlson. Bellefeuille
brought out the second and final caution flag spinning in turn
one with mechanical failure with five laps to go. By
this time, Jones was firmly in control and led to the checkered
flag ahead of Tyler Hynnes, J J Thompson , Carlson and D J
Severin.
The Pure Stock feature had it's share of
spills and spins as Al Rapp took the early lead but Gary
Campbell quickly drove into the top spot and pulled away to a
long lead. Trailing
were Rapp, Glen Dammer, J P Aase. Aase
was moving quickly and made his way to second as the red flag
flew when Cory Ziebel broke a wheel and rolled in turn one.
Shortly after the restart Campbell went off turn two bringing
out a caution flag and retired with two laps remaining leaving
the lead and eventual win to Aase for his first Pure Stock
feature win. Dammer,
Rapp, Todd Monahan and Scott Larsen finished in the top five.
The make up feature from the previous week
was won by Nick Lavato, who was then disqualified for an
unapproved exhaust system, thereby, giving the win to point
leader Gary Campbell.
