HANSON, SCHULTZ, NELSON, JONES, McLELLAN TOP PROCTOR FEATURES
By Jerry O'Brien
8-10-03
Proctor,
MN - Despite mid afternoon rain storms in the area, skies cleared and the Proctor Speedway raced a
full five class program on the final day of the South St Louis County Fair.
Darrell Nelson increased his WISSOTA Modified point lead by taking the Modified main event.
Harry Hanson scored his first Late Model feature of the season though he has several runner up finishes. Paul
Schultz nabbed his first Super Stock feature victory, Justin Jones in the Midwest Modifieds and
Jim McLellan Pure Stocks each won their third features of the season.
Harry Hanson led the 17 car WISSOTA Late Model feature to the green flag from the pole
position, survived three caution flags and streaked away to his first feature win of the season at
the speedway. Mike Meger the outside front row starter, survived a pitched battle with John
Massingill, Ed Wakefield and Steve Roseen to take the second spot.
Point leader Darrell Nelson's poor redraw saw him start 12th of the 17 runners.
He was able to advance to 7th and maintain the season points top spot.
As Hanson took the lead over Meger, the battle for third between Wakefield, Don Copp,
Massingill and Roseen raged until Clint Larson went off turn three bringing out the caution flag.
Hanson again sailed off to the lead over Meger and Darrell Nelson cracked the top ten. Nelson
then slipped off turn one dropping back to last when he rejoined the fray.
The battle for third lessened somewhat when Don Copp rolled to a halt in turn two.
The restart was aborted for debris on the track just at the half way point which had Hanson leading Meger, Wakefield,
Massingill, Jeff Hinkemeyer, Kevin Carlson, and Nelson who was back in the top ten.
Jodi Olson
was on the march forward from 10th but his strong run ended with mechanical problems after
battling for fifth in the closing stages. Hanson led every lap for the win over Meger, Wakefield,
Massingill and Roseen.
Darrell Nelson won his 7th WISSOTA Modified feature of the season overtaking pole sitter
and early leader Matt Sorenson and holding off a charging Steve Arpin to take the win.
Jason Miller, Kelly Estey and Sorenson finished in the top five
in an event that was slowed by three caution flags.
Paul Schultz led the WISSOTA Super Stock main event wire to wire from the pole holding off
Spike McDougall in his best run since returning from military service.
Point leader Scott Lawrence worked his way from the outside of the sixth row to contend for the top spot with
McDougall but had to settle for third. Mike qualified for the main event by winning the B Feature
and had a great run slicing through the field from 16th to fourth with Jay Kuras completing the
top five.
Justin Jones nipped leader Mark Kangas with a last lap charge off the fourth turn for his third
Midwest Modified feature win of the season. Kangas finished second ahead of Josh
Loucks, Loren Inman Jr and DJ Severin. Final results for the feature are pending as Loucks and Inman's race
cars were the subject of engine tear downs.
Jim McLellan won his third Pure Stock feature in four weeks coming to the front from the
outside of the second row. Al Rapp took the early lead from the inside of the second row with
Mike Fossness running second. McLellan slipped into second and grabbed the lead when Rapp
suffered a flat tire bringing out the caution flag. When racing resumed McLellan remained at the
point with Fossness, Rob Monahan, Cheryl Deloach and Roger Deloach in the top five as brother
and sister battled for fourth. Monahan's good run ended when he slipped off turn three bringing
out the caution flag. He would rebound to 9th ahead of Rapp in 10th.
Only one more caution flag
for debris slowed the action and McLellan took the win over Fossness, Roger Deloach, Ricky
Davis and Steve Young.
