NELSON
PULLS OF ANOTHER DOUBLE WIN
"On Fire" Driver Wins Both Late Model And Modified
Feature
By
Jerry O'Brien - 8-17-03
Darrell
Nelson won both the WISSOTA Late Model and Modified features at
the Proctor Speedway Sunday night August 17th.
It was the second time this season he has accomplished
this feat at the speedway and the fourth time this season he has
done it.
Starting
inside of the second row Nelson quickly moved around pole sitter
and Brother Nick into second as Harry Hanson had gotten the jump
at the green flag. Tim
McMann ran fourth and Ed Wakefield was fifth.
Nelson chased Hanson for a few laps as Wakefield took
fourth then third as Don Copp entered the top five.
McMann slowed on the back stretch with engine problems
just as Wakefield brought out the only caution of the event as
he flew off turn four head on into the dirt bank.
The ambulance was called but was not needed.
At the green flag Nelson tried to steal the lead from
Hanson but was unsuccessful the two went door to door for the
lead for several laps. At
the half way point Hanson still led Nelson by the slimmest of
margins. The duo
was followed by Nick Nelson, Copp and a very quick Mike Meger
who had started inside the sixth row and was now fifth.
Just past the half way point the low groove began to
develop as Meger continued his charge sliding into third.
Nelson tried low and got past Hanson only to have Hanson
turn the tables and get back into the lead before the lap was
completed. Nelson
moved to the high side in turn four as Hanson worked low.
Hanson made a very slight bobble and Nelson sailed by
taking the lead for the final time.
Hanson, Meger, Copp and Nick Nelson were top five
finishers.
Darrell
Nelson began the WISSOTA Modified feature from the pole position
and quickly took the lead.
Arch rival Kelly Estey quickly moved from the outside of
the second row to challenge for the point and the two went toe
to toe for several laps. Behind
them the battle raged between Jayme Lautigar, Jeff Lien and
Terry Inman and Jason Miller.
Steve Arpin in the number 28 car from Mars Race Cars
battled with Jeff Hart for sixth taking the position.
At the mid point it was Nelson, Estey, Lautigar, Lien and
Miller in the top five. As
the final lap was about to be signaled and Nelson and Estey
pulling away from the pack, a clash in the pack of cars going
for the third spot caused the only caution flag of the event.
Involved were Miller, Hart, Lautigar, Arpin and Lien.
Arpin and Lautigar were out of the event. Estey had one more try for the lead at the restart but Nelson
held him off for the win. Lien,
Hart and Tommy Turcotte finished in the top five.
The
WISSOTA Super Stock feature was plagued by yellow fever with at
least six caution flags in the 15 lap event.
When there was racing between spins and crashes, point
leader Scott Lawrence was the one to watch as he worked his way
from the outside of the sixth row, in heavy traffic, toward the
front. Spike
McDougall had the early lead from the pole and pulled away only
to have the caution flag thrown bringing the pack to his heels
once again. A
number of early starters fell victem to the spinning yellow
fever including Brad Arnes, Donnie Lofdahl and Nick Musel.
Lawrence kept working through traffic until he was in the
top five, then moved to third, then took second from Paul
Schultz. Another
caution flag put him on McDougall's bumper and, at the green
flag, went wheel to wheel for a couple of laps until Lawrence
was able to squeeze by in the first turn to take the point.
At the checkered flag Lawrence led McDougall, Schultz,
Rick Simpson up from the fourteenth starting spot to fourth and
Jeff Forseen from ninth to fifth.
Jay Kuras started on the outside of the front row and had
the early lead. He
spun with one lap in and was sent to the rear.
He drove hard and was able to work his way back just
short of a top five finish in sixth.
Ninth
starting Troy Jordan took the smallest motor in the Midwest
Modified feature, a Ford 302 Cubic Inch powered racer from the
ninth starting spot to the feature win.
An infrequent visitor, Jordan is in the top ten in
WISSOTA National point standings.
After a start which saw Bob Chesley suffer a flat tire in
turn one and the resulting slipping and sliding saw several
others spin bringing out the caution flag.
From that point on the event went wire to wire with
Jordan moving through traffic to leader Justin Jones' rear
bumper. Jordan then
challenged Jones to the inside of turn one and grabbed the lead
off turn two. He
went on to take the win over Jones, Loren Inman, Darren brown
and Mark Kangas.
Only
two caution flags marred the Pure Stock finale, the first for
Richard Dzelak's stalled car on the pit access road and the
second later on for a tangle that left Mike Fossness stalled in
turn one. Glen
Dammer had the early lead but just by feet as no one was able to
get away. Rick
Cornelison, Tim Lillo, Nick Lavato, and Rob Monahan were all in
a bunch for the lead. Lavato
finally worked his way free of the bunch and assumed the lead
but Tim Lillo driving daughter Melissa's car was on his back
bumper to the checkered flag.
Lavato was able to stave him off for the win.
Jim McLellan moved from tenth to third ahead of Dammer
and Cornelison.
