MILLER, NELSON, MASS, INMAN PROCTOR SPEEDWAY FEATURE WINNERS
Thompson Still Perfect In Pure Stocks
By Jerry O'Brien 6-13-04
Proctor, MN - Darrell Nelson Jason Miller and Dave
Mass won their respective feature events as did Terry Inman for
his first career Midwest Modified feature victory. Willy
Thompson stayed perfect in the Proctor Pure Stock division
sweeping his heat and the feature for the second straight
week.
Steve Roseen of Proctor sat on the pole for the 20 lap
WISSOTA Late Model feature behind the wheel of the Johnny
Johnson owned number 31R flanked by Kevin Carlson. Roseen
took an early lead over Darrell Nelson, Harry Hanson, Carlson
and Paul Wrazidlo. Nelson took the lead but Kevin Mudrak
spun in turn three to bring out the first of three caution
flags.
Roseen retained the lead at the green with Hanson passing
Nelson for second. Hanson and Nelson got past Roseen and
battled for the lead before Nelson took over for good as the
second caution flag flew for a John Massingill spin in turn two.
A couple of laps later the final caution flag appeared when a
marker tire was knocked out onto the track in turn four. Nelson
was the winner over Hanson, Roseen, Wrazidlo and Carlson in the
top five.
The WISSOTA Modified feature was a spin and crash filled
affair that saw a total of seven caution flags in the 20 lap
event. It took four tries before a lap could be completed
and Jason Miller would finally lead that lap after coming from
the second row to the lead. Miller held on to the lead
through four more slow downs one of which saw his closest
competition, veteran Kelly Estey, make a rare mistake causing
him to spin down the front stretch.
Miller held off Darrell Nelson and Steve Arpin both of whom
came from the fourth row to finish second and third. Jeff
Wood had another nice run from ninth to finish fourth while Cory
Jorgenson was fifth after Tyler Hynes weighed in under minimum
weight in post race inspection.
The 15 lap Super Stock feature racers seemed to take their
queue from the preceding Modified event as they produced a total
of eight caution flags. Between all the stoppages there
was some fierce competition at the head of the field between
Dave Mass, Scott Lawrence, Rick Rivord, Nick Musel, Ryan Aho, Al
Uotinen and Paul Schultz. Of these top drivers only Mass, who
was the eventual winner, Rivord who was runner up and Schultz
were in the top five at the finish.
Mike Bellefeuille who started fifteenth and finished third
and pole sitter Keith Kern were in the top five. Kern was
shuffled back out of the top ten quickly but a combination of
good driving and attrition landed him in the fourth spot.
Aho rebounded from a flat tire to finish ninth while Lawrence
spun while attempting to pass Mass for the lead in the late
going and could only muster a 14th place finish.
The Midwest Modifieds were on their best behavior until the
final circuit of their 15 lap main event. Mark Kangas led
Terry Inman, Tim Brown, Dan Wheeler and Mark Anderson in a
spirited battle for the lead in the early going with Inman
grabbing the lead and pulling away. At the half way mark
it was a break away for Inman with Brown, Wheeler, Kangas and
Anderson in that order. Inman went on to take his first
Midwest Modified career win over Anderson, Wheeler, Greg Chesley
up from 12th and Nick Lavato in the top five.
Jim McClellan and Scott Larsen paced the Pure Stock field to
the green flag in an event that would see a single caution
flag. Larsen and McClellan battled for the point for
several laps wheel to wheel before Larsen would take the lead
and began to pull away. Willy Thompson worked his way to
third and stayed close to McClellan as Larsen extended his lead
the caution flag flew for the only time in the event closing
McClellan up to Larsen's back bumper. Larsen led at the restart
but Thompson got past McClellan to second and grabbed the lead
away from Larsen. Thompson finished the sweep over Larson, a
fast moving Todd Monahan, McClellan and Tim Carlson in the top
five.
