PROVINZINO NABS PROCTOR LATE MODEL FEATURE
Makeup Features, Full Program make For Busy Night
By Jerry O'Brien - 7-18-04
Twenty-two races made for a busy evening as the Proctor
Speedway made up the four features from
the previous week that had been fogged out before beginning the
regularly scheduled five class program. Darrell Nelson cruised
to the makeup feature win in the WISSOTA Late Model division
from the outside of the front row after taking the lead from
early leader Andrew McKay. Harry Hanson moved past McKay in the
late stages to take second. Mckay, Tim McMann and Mike Meger
rounded out the top five.
Kyle Peterlin also cruised to the makeup Super
Stock feature starting from the outside of the front row. It was
a dandy battle for second between Ryan Aho, Scott Lawrence, Paul
Schultz, Dave Mass and Kevin Salin that saw positions swapped
almost every lap. A late race caution brought the pack to
Peterlin's heels bun no one was able to reel him in as he took
the checkered flag. Lawrence took second over Aho, Schultz
and Mass in the top five.
The outside of the front row seemed to be the place to start
in the makeup main events as Steve Arpin also grabbed the lead
in the WISSOTA Modified feature and held on to take the win over
Dave Mass, Jeff Hart, Darrell Nelson and Jeff Wood. In keeping
with all the other divisions, Al Rapp started the Pure Stock
feature from the outside pole and held on to take the win in an
event that saw a red flag situation when Allen Price took a
nasty tumble off turn one. Price was reported to be alright but
complaining of a sore neck. Rapp retained the lead to the
checkered flag over Miles Weske, Glen Dammer, Jim McLellan and
Rick Cornelison.
The first feature of the regularly scheduled racing was the
Midwest Modified feature that saw an unusual number of caution
flags. Newcomer Dean Hoffman redrew the pole position and looked
strong in the early going but a spin at the front of the pack
sent him to the rear after a skirmish with Nick Lavato. Mark
Anderson had found his way from tenth to third behind Dan
Wheeler. Lavato was the leader through three more caution
periods but Anderson got a hole shot off turn two on the restart
to shoot by Lavato for the lead. Wheeler and Justin Jones got by
Lavato in the waning laps to take second and third with Lavato
fourth and Kelly Checkalski up form 11th to take fifth.
Outside pole sitter Jeff Provinzino got the jump pole starter
Steve Roseen and took the lead but the action was slowed when
Duane Dale and Jeff Broking got hooked together and Broking
spun. Dale was sent to the rear and, at the Green Provinzino
retained the lead. John Massingill tried to make the high side
work but couldn't advance. Harry Hanson started fifth and was
able to work his way by Roseen for second. After a caution flag
for debris, Provinzino stuck to the bottom of the track and no
one could make a move as he led Hanson to the checkered flag.
Roseen, Mike Meger and Darrell Nelson followed.
Jeff Forseen led the early stages of the Super Stock main
event but it was Paul Schultz the pole sitter who ventured into
the high groove and made it stick long enough to get to the
lead. An early caution saw Rick Rivord grab the lead at the
restart with Schultz and Forseen trailing. The order remained
the same after another caution flag. It was at this time Schultz
was able to make the high groove work long enough to take the
lead and the eventual victory over Jay Kuras, Forseen, Dave Mass
up from 10th and Rivord.
The WISSOTA Modified main got off to a ragged start when Jeff
Wood was banged into the infield at the
green flag. Wood was sent to the rear and, at the green flag Don
Copp forced his way down low in turn one trying to take the lead
but Jeff Hart got there first, Copp was second and Jodi Olson
went to the high side for third. Copp made his way to the front
hugging the low line, Olson annexed second with Hart third, Jeff
Lien fourth and Dave Mass fifth. Copp went on to take his first
feature of the season in the experimental Affordable Chassis
Modified. Hart, Olson, Darrell Nelson from ninth and Jeff Wood
who was up from 19th to finish fifth.
Jim McClellan won a hotly contested Pure Stock
feature to finish of a full night of racing with a sweep of the
division. Al Rapp put on a stellar driving performance coming
from the 18th starting spot to finish a strong second. Early
leader and pole sitter Scott Larsen finished third, Willy
Thompson was fourth and Glen Dammer was fifth from 15th.
