HRON WINS FIRST CAREER WISSOTA MODIFIED FEATURE
Nelson, Lawrence, Loucks Win features, Pure Stock Feature
Postponed To Next Week
By Jerry O'Brien
A total of 120 cars filled the pits for racing action Sunday
night August first and there was plenty of action to go around. A couple of first time winners were mingled in with some
veteran drivers and one division's feature was put off until August eighth due to time
constraints. Ken Hron has only been able to race three times this season
twice breaking down in his new WISSOTA Modified at another track but the third time was
the
charm as he took the blue and silver number 46 to his first ever feature win in any kind of
racing.
After finishing second in his heat, the redraw was kind to Hron awarding him the pole
position, a spot he put to good use out dragging front row mate Jeff Hart to the first turn and
taking a quick lead. Hron survived three caution flags to take the stunning win over a stout field of
cars. 23 cars started the main event with 13 running at the checkered flag. Hron's biggest
opponent last half of the race was Dave Mass who could draw to the inside on the restarts but could
not muster enough to make the pass as Hron was very quick on the
top groove. Early on in the
event it was Mass, Hart, Cory Jorgenson and Dennis Checkalski showing in the top
running
bunch behind Hron. On lap four a tangle at the back of the pack sent the ambulance to the
fourth turn. No drivers were hurt but Vic Larson and Jamie Davis were done for the night as Clint
Larson and Kelly Estey were caught up in the incident.
There was more trouble on the restart as
Joey Galloway and Rod Heitala tangled in turn one with the ambulance
once again summoned. Neither
were hurt but Heitala as also out and Galloway was sent to the rear. Hron again led the pack
away from the green flag with Mass close behind. The two staged a break away
with Jorgenson, Jeff
Wood and Darrell Nelson now in the top five. Another caution stopped that break away
as Hart
suffered a flat right front, slid up and bunted Nelson off of the outside of turn two. Again and
Hron staged a break away but Jorgenson and Nelson soon caught up. Hron was in the catbird
seat but a stalled Jeff Lien brought out a yellow flag Hron did not want to see with two laps
remaining. Hron was equal to the task and took the win over Mass, Nelson, Wood and Don Copp.
It was an easy win for WISSOTA Late Model point leader
Darrell Nelson as the redraw was also kind to him giving him the pole for the 20 lap feature.
Nelson shot out to the early lead and was never seriously challenged though Bob Slater stayed
within hailing distance two caution flags and a red flag. The first caution
period was for Duane Dale
who slid off turn four and the second caution was also for Dale who lost the right
rear wheel also
in turn four. Sandwiched between the yellow flags was a red flag when Kelly Estey and Harry
Hanson
got together exiting turn two with Estey's car launched into the air. The car came to a stop and
Greg Hill with no place to go plowed into him. Neither were hurt but both were done.
At
this point officials shortened the laps to 15 with 11 remaining due to time constraints. Nelson went
on to the win over Slater, Tim McMann, Hanson and Jeff Broking.
The WISSOTA Super Stock main event also featured a win from
the pole position which was drawn by Scott Lawrence. Scheduled to start fourth was point
leader Ryan Aho but a flat tire on the pace lap dropped him to
the tail of the 21 car field.
Lawrence was sailing along in the lead followed by Paul Schultz, Rick Simpson and
Mike Bellefeuille
as they pulled away from fifth place Donnie Lofdahl. Here is where the wheels came off of a
perfect run...just before the white flag was due to appear, Bellefeuille who had moved to Lawrences'
rear bumper hit it in turn three spinning both out. Lawrence was restored to first and
Bellefeuille was sent to the rear. Lawrence again pulled away this time with Simpson trailing but before
the white flag could appear, Keith Kern was turned around in turn four and Schultz was
disqualified. Another try at the final two laps saw Gary Cornelison and Shawn Ziells tangle in the first
turn. During the final stoppage Jay Kuras who had been having a fine run from eighth into the top
five and Dave Mass from 11th into the top three were both out with
mechanical ills. Lawrence
one again held the lead and the race was mercifully finally over with Lawrence, Aho,
from the back
to pressure him for the win, Simpson, Lofdahl and Nick Musel finishing in the top five.
Josh Loucks has not raced his Midwest Modified since early in
the season but his return to competition was a triumphant one as the took the Dodge
powered number eight L into the winner's circle despite an event
slowed by four caution
flags. Loucks hung around in the top five through the caution periods until late in the
race when he
took the lead for good though he was pressured by Monte Hall with Mark Anderson up from
eighth to
third and Nick Lavato with a strong run to fourth. Point leader Dan Wheeler worked his way
forward from his 14th starting slot to round out the top five.
Due to time constraints, the Pure Stock main event will be
run on Sunday August 8th before regularly scheduled program.
