HANSON BEST IN PROCTOR LATE MODEL GO
Hron Nails
Second Consecutive Modified Feature
By Jerry O'Brien 8-15-04
Harry Hanson survived a setback at the beginning of the 20
lap WISSOTA Late Model feature to take home the popular win. At
the green flag Tim McMann jumped out to an early lead but Duane
Dale looped in turn four and it was a complete restart. The
second time was little better as Hanson was judged to have
jumped the start and was penalized back to the second row moving
Jeff Broking to the pole. Broking got a good start and took the
lead with Darrell Nelson, McMann and Hanson battling for second.
A few lengths back Kevin Carlson, Steve Roseen and John
Massingill also skirmished for fourth and fifth. Hanson tried
the top side of the track and made it stick as he swept around
Broking and pulled away for feature win number two at the
speedway. Nelson got by Broking for third with McMann and
Carlson finishing in the top five.
Naswauk's Ken Hron made it two consecutive WISSOTA Modified
feature wins at the speedway in his only two visits and only his
fifth time out with the new number 46 Modified. Hron's luck with
the redraw was excellent once again as he drew the outside of
the front row. At the green he shot to the high side and never
deviated from his line throughout the 15 lap event. Hron flirted
with disaster each lap as the Late Models had virtually
decimated any cushion leaving a scant two feet and no margin for
error on the almost wall less speedway. Hron powered around the
outside as a succession of drivers had a try at wresting the
lead from him. Also three caution flags brought the field to his
heels during the course of the event. It came down to Hron
sticking to the high line and Steve Arpin up from row three
trying to dive to the inside in the turns. The duo were joined
by Darrell Nelson who started 15th and finished third. Lapped
traffic threatened to throw a monkey wrench into the works but a
fortuitous caution flag wiped out the threat putting the lapped
cars behind the leaders. Hron only needed to hold on for three
more laps which he did for the win. Arpin crossed the line
second with Nelson, Cory Jorgenson and Dave Mass in the front
five. Mass had started third but lost ground and had to rebound
to finish fifth.
Mike Bellefeuille celebrated his birthday with a convincing
win in the WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Starting outside the
second row, Bellefeuille split the front runners off turn two
and grabbed a lead that he would never give up despite the
action being slowed by three caution flags. While Bellefeuille
pulled away from the pack, second was hotly contested by several
strong racers including Scott Lawrence, pole sitter Eric Nelson
and Kevin Salin. Ryan Aho started 10th and wasted little time
making it into the top five where he battled with Lawrence,
Nelson, Kyle Peterlin and Joe Oliver before skinning past
Lawrence to second. Though he tried in the closing laps,
Bellefeuille had the field covered and nailed down his second
feature win and first since opening night. Aho finished second
with Lawrence third, Nelson fourth and Oliver fifth. Aho is in a
tight battle for the National title with Dave Mass who suffered
a rare DNF.
The normally mild WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds had their share
of troubles getting that first lap in as it took four tries to
complete a single circuit. When they did get it moving, it was
outside pole sitter Monte Hall who grabbed the lead and held on
to take win number two on the season at the speedway. All was
hounded all the way by Harry Hanson who was substituting for the
injured Mark Kangas but held him off for the win. Justin Jones
made a return to the speedway and posted a third place finish
from the outside of row number four. Nick Lavato came from tenth
to fourth while Kelly Checkalski finished fifth. Point
leader Dan Wheeler managed a sixth place
run after starting outside the first dozen
cars.
It was flag to flag for the Pure Stock feature
though there were some near misses. The
young drivers have been having their way lately but this time it
was a veteran crew at the head of the field. Jon McKinnon has
taken off the 2004 season to regroup and help his sister StacEy
with her car. This time he climbed behind the wheel and moved
through the pack from the outside of the fourth row to snare the
win. Hot on his heels for the last few laps was Jim McClellan.
Scott Larsen ran in the top three before first year driver Rick
Kesty arrived to take third after a stellar run from 19th on the
20 car field. Another veteran Rob Monahan finished in fifth
after starting 17th.
