NELSON AGAIN! WINS FOURTH FEATURE OF SEASON
Aho Takes Super Main, Lunde Wins First Career Pure Stock Feature
By Jerry O'Brien - 08/22/2004

Darrell Nelson of Hermantown extended his Late Model point lead in defense of his track title with his fourth feature win of the season. Nelson started ninth in the field and worked his way forward while at the front pole sitter Andrew McKay led Jeff Broking and Duane Dale in the early going with Steve Roseen and Kevin Carlson in striking distance. Last week's winner Harry Hanson appeared to have handling problems and spun from the outside pole. Everyone following missed him and he ended up at the rear of the field with no caution flag thrown. McKay continued in the lead using the high side with  Roseen second and Nelson up to third. Dale got a strong run down the back stretch and split Roseen and Nelson but entered turn three too hot and spun bringing out the first caution flag. At the restart Tim McMann got a good jump and took second but a tangle between Nick Nelson and John Massingill in turn one negated the great move. At the green flag Hanson's trouble continued with a turn one spin stopping the action. It was a single file restart with McKay still leading an at the mid point it was McKay, Nelson, McMann, Carlson, Roseen and Nick Nelson. Just past half way McKay decided to try the low side and Nelson got by into the lead. A couple laps later Hanson's tribulations ended with the car against the front stretch wall causing the final caution period. Nelson went on to take the win as McMann squeaked by McKay for second as Roseen nipped Carlson for fourth.

Darrell Nelson redrew the pole for the Modified feature with Clint Larson alongside. There was trouble on the first lap when Tom Turcotte was apparently forced into the front stretch wall. On the restart Turcotte and Jeff Wood had a confrontation with both spinning. Wood then charged across the track and slammed into Turcott's stationary machine. Both were out of the event with further consequences unknown. The action was slowed twice more toward the end but it was the duel between Nelson and fifth starting Steve Arpin that all eyes were upon as they battled side by side and traded slide jobs at either end of the speedway. Further back Larson and Jason Miller battled for third with Miller squeezing by. Arpin finally made the pass stick and picked up the hard fought win over Nelson, Miller, Larson and Don Copp finished in the front five.

Ryan Aho overcame a bad redraw that put him ninth on the starting grid to take the feature win and unofficially both the track point lead and the National WISSOTA point lead as closest rival Dave Mass suffered a cut tire in a first lap clash. At the green flag it was outside front row sitter Scott Lawrence shooting into the lead ahead of Nick Musel while Aho worked his way past Spike McDougall and Rick Rivord to the third spot. The event went to the half way point without a caution flag as Lawrence had them covered but just past the mid point Lawrence pulled into the infield with apparent mechanical problems leaving Musel to fend off Aho as the first of two caution flags flew for a Rick Simpson spin in turn four. At the green Aho dived to the inside and he and Musel went wheel to wheel until Aho was able to edge ahead. The final caution flag flew for a tangle between Ron Malecki and Bryan Youderin in the first turn putting Musel back in the lead. Aho wasted no time retaking the lead to win the feature, his 21st over all to unofficially take the National point lead. Musel, Kyle Peterlin, McDougall and Rivord rounded out the top five.

The Midwest Modified feature say six caution flags mar the action as Monte Hall won his second consecutive feature at the speedway. Pole sitter Kelly Checkalski led in the early going and appeared to be on his way to a win before mechanical gremlins forced him to relinquish the lead to Hall who had started third. Mark Anderson assumed second spot arriving there from the inside of the fourth row. A pair of number 97's finished behind the leaders, Harry Hanson in Mark Kangas' car finished third and Greg Chesley recovered from a Friday night half roll over to take fourth with Dan Wheeler filling the top five runners.

It looked, in the early going that Jon McKinnon was going to have a repeat performance of the previous weeks Pure Stock feature win in sister Stacy's car but after taking the point from pole sitter Dustin Lunde, a breakdown sidelined him. A single caution flag slowed the action near the half way point when the caution flew for a tangle in turn one. Lunde hung around the front the entire race and ended up with his first career feature win. Steve Young, Joey Ogsten, Rob Monahan and Scott Larsen finished in the top five.
