KAANTA NAILS DOWN SECOND STRAIGHT SILVER 1000
Oertel Flag To Flag In Modified Main For Sweep
By Jerry O'Brien 9-2-04

The 32nd annual Silver 1000 presented by the Black Bear Casino caught a perfect day for racing. With temperatures in the lower 80's, the fans came out in droves filling the stands to capacity with an estimated 3000 in attendance. A great field of 40 WISSOTA Late Models and 50 Modifieds were on hand to do battle. After the five late model qualifying heats in which the top four qualified for the 40 lap feature were completed, the heat winners ran a "Dash for Cash" that determined the makeup of the first three rows for the feature. Winning the dash was two time Silver 1000 winner Steve Laursen over Trent Follmer, Justin "The Jet" Fegers, Todd gehl and Rick Hanestad. Laursen and Follmer, veteran and "Young Gun" led the 25 car field to the green flag with Follmer grabbing the early lead Gehl, Fegers and Darrell Nelson trailed. With a single circuit complete, the mount of Jeff Provinzino rolled to a halt on the back stretch bringing out the first of two caution periods.

Action soon resumed with Follmer retaining the lead over Laursen while Fegers gained third. Fegers got by Laursen, moved alongside Follmer and the battle for the lead was on as the two youngsters pulled away from the veterans. Fegers got a great run off turn two and completed the pass for the lead on lap three, then proceeded to run away and hide in traffic for the next 32 circuits. Follmer chased Fegers through traffic while fending off Laursen. Further back Gehl and Nelson skirmished for fourth. Making his presence felt at this point was defending race champion John Kaanta cracking the top five in fourth. Laursen began working the low groove in an effort to take second from Follmer. At the mid point Fegers led Follmer, Laursen, Kaanta, and Nelson.

Trailing, but gaining on the leaders were Pat Doar, Gehl, Hanestad, Bill Byholm and John Seitz. Laursen, Kaanta and Nelson took their battle for third deep in lapped traffic as Fegers still held the edge. Kaanta began his move as the laps began to wind down taking third from Laursen and closed on Follmer in an effort to gain second. With five laps remaining the final caution flag, one that Fegers did not want to see, appeared for a large piece of debris in turn one. The caution gave Fegers a clear race track and gave second back to Follmer.

At the green flag, Fegers got a good start but Kaanta quickly got by Follmer and began to pressure Fegers to the inside. The two battled for a couple of laps side by side with Kaanta's low line working just a bit better. Fegers slipped up just a bit exiting turn two giving Kaanta the opening the veteran had been seeking and he shot into the lead. Fegers came back the next time by, ran a bit too hard into the first turn, dropped the right rear off the track recovering for a disappointing ninth place finish. Kaanta won his second consecutive Silver 1000 over Follmer, Nelson, Doar and Hanestad.

Chris Oertel made the long tow to the Proctor Speedway from Marshfield, WI pay off for him as he led the 25 lap Modified feature flag to flag for the "biggest win of my career". Oertel was very pleased with the track conditions stating "I've never driven on a track with so much bite" The event would be slowed by four caution flags, but at the start Oertel jumped to the lead from the outside of the front row where he had started by virtue of his "Dash for Cash" second place finish, and he and pole sitter Jason Miller set off to settle it by themselves. A flat left rear tire for Steve Arpin brought out the first slow down when he was unable to find a way off the speedway in heavy traffic.

At the green flag Oertel again powered away while Dave Friendt took a run at Miller for second but was unable to make the pass. Brad Hanson and Dean Yrjanainen battled for fourth with Craig Thatcher fifth. Thatcher got by Hanson and dueled with Yrjanainen for fourth, got the position and began to work on Friendt for third. Those six drivers would be the main players throughout the event. At the half way point it was Oertel, Miller, Friendt, Yrjanainen, Hanson and Thatcher in the front running six. The second caution flag showed with 21 laps in and four to go when Kelly Estey was spun in turn two. At the green flag Oertel nearly slipped off turn two but held on and remained in front while Yrjanainen grabbed the third spot. Yrjanainen, Thatcher, Miller and Friendt were in a pitched battle for second as the checkered flag drew nearer but the action was slowed for a tangle in turn one two laps short of the  money lap.

Oertel still led at the green flag but the caution quickly reappeared when Jeff Hart spun off turn four and Rod Heitala stalled on the back stretch setting up a shootout. Oertel held on for the win over Friendt, Yrjanainen, Hanson and Miller in the top five while Thatcher held on to sixth.
