PROCTOR SPEEDWAY HOST RECORD CAR COUNT
Grandstands Filled As Speedway Attempts To Get In First Complete
Show of Season
By Jerry O'Brien
6-12-05
Mother Nature relented Sunday July 12th and gave the Proctor
Speedway a perfect day to attempt to get in its first complete
show of the 2005 season. A record car count greeted a full house
as racing was scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. with four makeup
features on tap from the May 28th show that was rained out after
the Late Model feature.
In the makeup features it was Monte Hall taking the win over
early leader Nick Lavato. It looked as though Lavato had a
chance to take his first win in a Midwest Modified but the
flying Hall came forward from the 9th starting slot to nip
Lavato for the lead and the win. Pole sitter Pete Hines was
third ahead of National Point Leader Justin Jones and Dick
Walters in the top five.
Tim Johnson turned the outside pole position into the winning
position as he took the win in the
WISSOTA Super Stock makeup feature. Pole sitter Kevin Salin was
second in his best run in some time at the Proctor Speedway
while Scott Lawrence came from deep in the field to take third
ahead of Bobby Carlson and Destin Lorimor. National Super Stock
point leader, Ryan Aho, had a difficult race starting third,
falling off the top of turn one to lose several spots at the
start before rebounding to finally finish 7th.
Kelly Estey parlayed the pole
position for the WISSOTA Modified makeup feature into the win as
he got out front quickly and dominated the event taking the win
over a very fast Brad Hanson who came from the 11th starting
spot to finish second.Jayme Lautigar, Marc Johnson and Johnny
Carpenter rounded out the top five.
Rob Monahan cruised to an easy
win in the Pure Stock makeup main event, also from the pole
position over a closing Ricky Davis. Jim McClellan, Scott Larsen
and Jon McKinnon finished in the top five.
With the makeup features in the
books it was time to run heat races and B Mains for the 170 car
field in five divisions. With that task completed the first of
five features rolled onto the track. There were 21 WISSOTA Late
Models in competition and all 21 headed out onto the 3/8ths mile
oval for their 20 lap main event led by Danny Young and Jeff
Provinzino. At the green flag Young shot out into the lead over
Provinzino with a fast moving Harry Hanson third ahead of Ed
Wakefield and Jeff Broking. The first of an uncharacteristic six
caution flags appeared when Caley Emerson spun in turn three. At
the restart Young again took the lead over Provinzino with
Broking now in third, Hanson fourth and Tom Nesbitt riding in
fifth. Hanson again moved to third as Provinzino battled for the
lead with Young.
Caution flag number two flew when
Mike Meger slowed on the back stretch. Young again led the pack
to the green flag with Provinzino and Hanson on his tail.
Provinzino now had Hanson to worry about as he battled wheel to
wheel with him letting Young ease out into a bit of a lead.
Again the action was slowed with the third caution period as
Kelly Estey found himself facing the wrong way in turn two. Yet
again Young held the point as two laps after the restart Hanson
disposed of Provinzino and set out after the leader. Hanson
tracked down Young and they dueled briefly until Hanson was able
to gain the edge off turn four and take over the lead. The
yellow flag flew for the fourth time when Johnny carpenter slid
off turn one. At the green Hanson led Young but the caution gave
Provinzino the opportunity and he wrested second from Young only
to have caution flag number five for the stalled ride of Nick
Nelson in the first turn give Young back is spot. Hanson led
Young with Provinzino third. Darrell Nelson was up to
fourth.
The final caution flag flew for
Johnny Carpenter again as he slid off turn four this time. At
the restart Young got a great jump on Hanson and took the lead
only to have Hanson regain it with a strong move off turn four.
Hanson dominated the final laps for the win with Young,
Provinzino, Nelson and Wakefield rounding out the top five at
the finish.
Scott Hudack was the pole sitter
as the WISSOTA Modified feature headed out onto the racing
surface with Jeff Wood to his outside shoulder. At the green
Wood grabbed the lead over Kelly Estey with Hudack and Paul
Schultz following. Darrell Nelson and Don Copp made their way
into the top five as Estey chased Wood. In the early going the
top groove appeared faster as Estey repeatedly dove to the
inside of Wood but was unable to complete the slide move to take
the lead. While the leaders drew away, it was Arpin, Copp and
Nelson battling for third. Estey kept working the low side until
he was able to clear Wood and take the lead as Copp won the
skirmish for third.
A clash between Steve Arpin and a
fast closing Brad Hanson resulted in Arpin's ride turning turtle
in the first turn bringing out the red flag. Arpin appeared to
be uninjured but was visibly upset with Hanson. At the green
flag Estey led Wood, Nelson, Copp and Hudack. Wood got a great
run and got past Estey for the lead but a caution flag for an
incident in the first turn involving Jeff Lien and Duane Dale
brought out the final caution flag. Estey
was restored to the lead as a full lap had not been completed
leaving Wood in second. On the white flag lap Copp who had made
it to third, took second from Wood with Hudack fourth and Nelson
fifth.
At this point with three features
yet to finish, the curfew was reached and the final three events
were postponed to Sunday night June 19. It was also announced
that for the remainder of the summer racing at the speedway will
start 30 minutes earlier with hot laps at 4:30 and racing at 5
p.m.
