HANSON SWEEPS LATE MODEL
ACTION AT PROCTOR
By Jerry O'Brien
6-19-2005
Harry
Hanson of
Eveleth
MN
swept the Late Model action at the Proctor Speedway Sunday, June
19th winning the first heat and running away with the last half
of the 20 lap feature event. Hanson started from the outside of
the front row battling with pole sitter Kelly Estey. Tom Nesbitt
was third ahead of Steve Laursen, Tim McMann and Steve Vesel.
Nesbitt and McMann found some speed on the back stretch and
surged forward with Nesbitt to second and McMann fourth. Jeff
Broking was sixth as Laursen began to lose ground. The first and
only caution flag flew when Nick Nelson slid off turn four.
At
the green flag it was Hanson, Nesbitt, Estey, McMann and,
newcomer to the top five, Ed Wakefield. Broking lost fifth on
the restart then lost sixth to Darrell Nelson who had started
11th. Estey began to work on Nesbitt for second but Nesbitt was
able to hold him off. McMann took third from Estey as
Wakefield
was fourth and Jeff Provinzino moved into fifth. Hanson held a
huge lead as the white flag flew with Nesbitt firmly in second.
There was an incident in the fourth turn as the field was headed
for the checkers that left Estey facing the wrong way. Hanson
took the win over Nesbitt, McMann and Provinzino while Estey was
restored to fifth and
Wakefield
who was charged with the foul, was scored last.
Don
Copp of Brule, WI recorded his first WISSOTA Modified feature
win at the speedway in some time. Copp returned to the Modified
ranks in 2004 after several seasons behind the wheel of a Late
Model. At the start pole sitter Jeff Hart shot into the lead
from the pole with Don Coppin second. Kelly Estey was up from
the second row to third and Darrell Nelson, with a quick move
went from eighth to fourth but a quick caution flag for a Jad
Carlson spin brought things to a quick halt. The attempted
restart stalled when a clash in the first turn flattened a front
tire on John Reini's car. He shot straight across the turn and
off the track to the pits but Jim Inman spun to avoid the
scrambling cars and stalled.
At
the green flag Copp took the lead over Estey and Jason Miller
with Marc Johnson, Hart and Nelson in tow. Nelson was marching
forward and took over third then got past Miller for third.
Estey tried the low line in an effort to gain the lead but he
was unable to make the pass as Copp went on to take the win over
Estey, Nelson, Miller and Hart.
Ryan
Aho drew the pole position for the WISSOTA Super Stock feature
alongside Jim Campbell and took the point with Mike Bellefeuille
to second, Jay Kuras third,
Campbell
fourth and Scott Lawrence fifth. Kuras got by Bellefeuille into
second and began to challenge Aho for the lead but the action
slowed when the car of Paul Schultz showed serious smoke and
pulled off the track but not out of harms way bringing out the
caution flag.
At
the green flag, Kuras got the jump on Aho and took the lead with
Bellefeuille, Kyle Peterlin and Lawrence in the top five. As the
laps counted down the top and bottom seemed to be about equal
and all eyes were on the duel for the lead. Aho took over the
top spot but Kuras came right back with the top six cars in a
tight bunch. It looked as though Kuras would get the win but Aho
nipped him at the line for the victory. Lawrence, Peterlin and
Bellefeuille finished top five.
Shane
Sabraski was looking for a complete sweep of the evening as he
had earlier won the make up feature and his heat in the regular
program in the Midwest Modified division. At the green flag,
Danny Vang took the point from the outside of the front row with
Joey Ogston sneaking through from the second row into second
ahead of pole sitter John Hettinga and Pete Hines. The first of
three caution flags flew when Josh Loucks spun in turn one. The
single file restart saw Vang and Ogston duel with Hettinga,
Hines, Miles Weske and Sabraski close behind. Sabraski was
strong on the inside line taking sixth then advancing to fourth,
but it was all for nothing as Weske spun in turn two bringing a
complete restart. At the green Vang and Ogston still battled but
Sabraski was now close behind. closing on the front runners from
the tenth starting spot was Justin Jones who was now in fourth.
Sabraski took the lead and at the half way point it was Sabraski,
Vang, Jones, Hettinga and Steve Alsaker in the top five. Just
outside the top five was Nick Lavato who quickly joined the
battle. The final caution flag flew for the spin of Vang with
Lavato charged and sent to the back. Sabraski did not want to
see that caution as he now had Jones on his rear bumper. At the
restart Jones pulled a power move and took the lead from
Sabraski and held it to the checkered flag. Sabraski, Alsaker,
Mark Kangas, and Hines were in the top five in that order.
Mark
Carlson drew the pole for the Pure Stock feature alongside Al
Rapp. At the start, Rapp took the lead with Carlson Jim
McClellan Dustin Lunde and Rob Monahan trailing. McClellan was
quickly up to second as Carlson and Monahan battled with Carlson
running Monahan high in turn one. Monahan slipped a wheel over
the edge and lost several spots. The problem escalated when
Monahan caught Carlson several laps later and then appeared to
clash with Carlson spinning to bring out the only caution of the
event. After things settled down, Rapp and McClellan continued
to battle and it came down to the final lap with the lapped car
of Carlson again in the middle. He held his line and the two
leaders surged around him without incident. In the drag race
down to the finish line Rapp edged Mcclellan by a bumper. Lunde,
Monahan and Glenn Dammer who had come from 11th rounded out the
top five.
In
the makeup features from June 12th Shane Sabraski of
Rice
Minn.
was the feature winner in the Midwest Modifieds. He started on
the outside of the front row, took the lead and never was really
challenged as he took the win. Almost from the outset the race
on the track was for second as Sabraski dominated. A single
caution flag brought the field to Sabraski's bumper but to no
avail as he easily turned back any challenges and drove off to a
long lead and the win over
Troy
Jordan who came from fifth row to finish second. Jones, Pete
Hines, and Nick Lavato finished in that order in the top five.
In
the Super Stock make up feature Jeff Forseen took the early lead
from the front row but Ryan Aho was on the move from the third
row and soon caught up to Forseen. They then proceeded to run
wheel to wheel for several laps before a caution for an incident
in turn four brought out the yellow flag, the second and final
one. The first was for a marker tire that had been flung out on
the track. Aho regained the top spot at the green with Scott
Lawrence sneaking into second on the bottom of the track as the
white flag appeared. Aho was the winner over Lawrence, Tim
Johnson, Jay Kintner and Forseen.
Jim
McClellan was the winner of the Pure Stock make up event over
Rick Kesty, Glenn Dammer, and Dustin Lunde. Rob Monahan got a
bit of a jump on the field at the green but spun out in front of
the pack. At the green it was Kestey to the lead but McClellan
was on the move and quickly took over the point. After a caution
period for a tangle between Skeeter Estey and Nick Baker,
McClellan took the point, the field strung out behind him and
stayed that way to the end. Finishing in the top five were
McClellan, Kestey, Al Rapp, Jon McKinnon and Scott Larsen.
