HANSON AGAIN IN PROCTOR LATE MODEL GO
Schultz, Aho, Chesley, Morinville Capture Other Features
By Jerry O'Brien
8-7-05
Steve Laursen made a return visit to the Proctor Speedway
Sunday night and drew the pole position for the 20 lap main
event. Laursen took the lead at the green flag with outside pole
sitter Darrell Nelson falling into second ahead of Bob Broking,
Harry Hanson and John Massingill. Laursen could manage no more
than a three car length lead but Hanson found a lot of traction
at the top of the track, flew by Nelson and Laursen down the
straight and made it stick through three and four taking the
lead down the front stretch. Nelson took second away from
Laursen at this point. The first of three caution flags flew for
Tim McMann who spun off turn two and limped into the pits
with mechanical problems.
At the start Hanson maintained the lead with Nelson, Laursen,
Jeff Broking and Bob Broking trailing. Massingill got a run on
Bob Broking and took fifth and caution flag number two appeared
when Travis Budislavovich ran out of room at the top of turns
three and four and spun backwards off the track.
At the green flag the third caution flag flew quickly after
Nick Musel got turned around just about half way through. While
under the caution flag Laursen pulled off the track with
reported overheating. Hanson maintained the lead to the
checkered flag winning his third feature at the speedway this
season. Nelson, Jeff Broking, Joel Cryderman and Danny Young in
the top five.
The Modified feature didn't make the first lap before there
was trouble for Zach Wohlers in the first turn. The car showed a
flat right rear and left the speedway on the hook. The rest of
the 15 lap event went to the checkered flag without another
slowdown which left plenty of time for racing. Paul Schultz
started from the pole and led all 15 circuits for the win. Jason
Miller was in the hunt early but faded from contention as
Darrell Nelson moved up to second from fifth and Al Uotinen made
a charge from 12th to third. While outside pole sitter, John
Reini, was fourth and Duane Dale came from 11th to finish
fifth.
WISSOTA National point leader Ryan Aho redrawing the pole
position one would think that it would have been a runaway but
this was not the case as 19 year old Kyle Peterlin stayed right
with Aho to the checkered flag. Two caution flags spoiled the
event, the first with only one of 15 laps recorded when Rick
Simpson found himself facing the wrong way in turn one.
At the start Peterlin got the jump and took the point, but
shortly thereafter a tangle between Jay Kuras and Dave Flynn in
turn three/four again slowed the action. At the green flag Aho
and Peterlin resumed their battle while Scott Lawrence and Eric
Nelson had their own skirmish a couple of car lengths back for
third place and were soon joined by a very quick Destin Lorimor.
At he half way point it was still too close to call for the
lead while Lawrence had gotten by Nelson into third with Mike
Bellefeuille making his presence felt behind Nelson in fifth.
Aho finally slipped past Peterlin for the lead and took the win.
Peterlin, Lawrence, Nelson and Bellefeuille finished in the top
five.
Greg Chesley had them covered in the 15 lap Midwest Modified
feature leading front row mate Riley Matthews across the line
with only one caution flag for a Willy Thompson spin in turn one
in the early going. Nick Lavato put on a charge from 10th to
third getting past Monty Hall in the late going while Darren
Brown moved from 12th to round out the top five.
Leave it to the Pure stocks to show them how it is done as
they ran their 15 lap feature with nary a caution flag. Jim
McClellan was the hare to the hounds in the early going over
pole sitter Tom Morinville while further back there was some
three wide racing for fifth. There was even an attempt to go
four wide off turn two and they actually made it without
incident. Racing quickly forward from seventh was Rob Monahan
into the third spot while Jon McKinnon was running fourth. As
the white flag flew with Morinville back in the lead, McKinnon
tried a strong move in turn three but bounced up the track in
front of Monahan and fifth running Al Rapp.
While everyone was attempting to gather their cars up Jason
Rockwell shot through on the bottom to grab third. Morinville
won his first of the season at the speedway ahead of Monahan,
Rockwell, McKinnon and Rapp. McClellan ended up in sixth
place.
Justin Jones bested Riley Matthews in the Midwest Modified
makeup feature with Darren Brown finishing third. Rick
Simpson won the Super Stock makeup feature over Scott Lawrence
with Mike Bellefeuille, Jay Kuras and Ryan Aho in the top
five.
