HANSON WINS FOURTH 05' LM
FEATURE
By Jerry O'Brien
8-14-05
Eveleth Minnesota's Harry Hanson won his fourth WISSOTA Late
Model feature of the season at the Proctor Speedway Sunday night
August 14th. Hanson redrew the outside pole position for the 20
lap main event outside the number 6m of young Jeff Massingill.
At the green flag Massingill took the point with Darin
Meierotto following him through on the bottom as Darrell Nelson
and Hanson shook out amongst the early leaders. Meierotto took
the lead at the line on the initial circuit as Hanson blew into
second towing Nelson past Massingill as Tim McMann settled into
fifth. McMann had his hands full with Jeff Provinzino and the
two battled for position. The only caution flag of the event
appeared with five laps complete when newcomer Gary Walton slid
off the top of turn four.
At the restart Hanson blew around Meierotto into the lead and
was never challenged for the remaining 15 circuits. Hanson
streaked away from Meierotto who put some distance on Nelson as
Provinzino found something on the bottom and stole fourth from
McMann as the ten lap mark was reached. The second half saw
almost everyone in the top groove except for Mike Meger and a
couple others as Hanson began lapping back markers. It was an
easy victory for the popular veteran. Meierotto, Nelson,
Provinzino and McMann rounded out the rest of the top
five.
Rod Heitala paced the scheduled 17 car WISSOTA Modified
field to the green flag. Before the pace lap Clint Larson
dropped into the pits and John Reini failed to appear leaving 15
cars to take the green. Outside pole starter Paul Schultz got
the jump at the outset looking for his second consecutive
feature win at the speedway and led the first lap by a bumper.
Jeff Wood quickly challenged Schultz from the second row and the
two blasted into the first turn. Track point leader Kelly Estey
was already in third from seventh and battling with Don Copp for
the position. Copp retained the position and Estey had his hands
full with Al Uotinen as he tried to keep the position. The first
of two caution flags flew when Marc Johnson spun with four laps
in.
At the green flag Wood took the inside line and slid up the
track forcing Schultz off the top of the turn. By the time he
regained control the rest of the pack had boiled by. A lap later
the caution light again blinked on as Johnson again spun and
left the track.
At the start Nelson gained the lead with Copp, Estey, Uotinen
and Jeff Lien in the top five as wood fell off the pace and
departed for the pits. Nelson moved off to a huge lead over Copp
which held up to the checkered flag. Uotinen, Estey and Lien
finished in the front five.
Greg Chesley used his pole position in the Midwest Modified
20 lap feature to take his second consecutive feature win at the
speedway. Att he green Chesley got a great jump on the field and
took the lead while Nick Lavato slid up from the fifth starting
slot to grab second ahead of Shawn Ziells as Mark Kangas
followed Ziells through to fourth with Al McDougall fifth.
Chesley pulled out to a three quarter straight away lead over
Lavato who had his hands full with Shawn Ziells. Greg Carlson
grabbed fifth from McDougall and the leading group were strung
out in single file. At the mid point it was Chesley, Lavato,
Ziells, Kangas and Carlson up front.
Lurking just outside the top five were Justin Jones and Scott
Zaradil. The first caution flag flew when Willy Thompson spun on
the back stretch just at the half way point with the one more
lap in, the caution flag again appeared when Jim Lowinski looped
in turn four. Chesley led the entire distance over Lavato,
Kangas, Jones and Darren Brown who came from the B main to
finish fifth.
Kyle Peterlin and Donnie Lofdahl paced the WISSOTA Super
Stock field to the green flag and all was well until three
quarters of a lap had been completed. At this point Lofdahl went
sideways for some reason in front of nearly the entire field.
Several cars piled into the heap which included Steve Estey,
track and national point leader Ryan Aho, Mike Bellefeuille and
Rick Simpson. Both Lofdahl and Bellefeuille were out of the
event. Aho went to the pits and returned with most of the front
sheet metal missing. The field again tried for a start with 20
laps to go but couldn't get the entire field through before
Gordy Maki and Wayne Stricker tangled in the first turn.
Another try, another caution as Robbie Cooper spun in turn
one. By this time track officials had had enough and it was a
single file restart which worked. Peterlin had the point with
Jay Kuras second then Simpson, Dave Flynn and Jeff Forseen.
Scott Lawrence who had started ninth found his way on the bottom
to the fifth spot and was in a tight skirmish with Simpson,
Forseen and Flynn for position as Peterlin and Kuras ran away to
settle it between them.
Lawrence broke free and took third as Kuras got a great run
on the outside to nab the lead. At this point Aho who had been
struggling with the battered car pulled off. Kuras was in
command and ran away from Peterlin to take his first feature win
in some time. Peterlin, Lawrence, Forseen and Eric Nelson
finished in the top five.
Jim McClellan won the Pure Stock 15 lap main event starting
from the fourth position. A pair of 79's Rick Wilhelm and Ricky
Davis paced the 20 car field to the green flag but Cheryl
Deloach brought the action to a halt when she spun in turn one.
At the restart Wilhelm led Davis, Jason Ziells, Rick Kesty and
McClellan. There was a mess in turn one with Kesty and Davis
spinning. Kesty left the track as the green flag again appeared.
Ziells was the leader over Wilhelm, Davis, McClellan and a fast
moving Tony Ciurleo. Wilhelm moved up to challenge Ziells for
the lead and the two raced side by side as McClellan burst out
of the pack into third while Davis had Tom Morinville and
Ciurleo all over him for fourth. The second caution flag flew
when Skeeter Estey stalled.
At the green Ziells held the point with Wilhelm and McClellan
right behind. Davis lost fourth to Morinville and Ciurleo moved
by to fifth. Just as Wilhelm took the lead Steve Christman had a
mechanical failure and spun in turn one. At the green Wilhelm
grabbed the lead but it was McClellan who was the challenger
this time and got to the front. Ziells was third, Morinville
fourth and Ciurleo fifth but the final caution flag flew when
Ciurleo slid off the top of turn four. With four circuits
remaining, McClellan edged ahead of Wilhelm and took the lead as
Wilhelm and Ziells battled for second. At the checkered flag it
was Mcclellan with the win over Wilhelm, Ziells, Morinville a
Scott Larsen who started 11th and finished fifth.
