HANSON AGAIN!
WINS FIFTH LATE MODEL FEATURE AT PROCTOR

Veteran Late Model driver Harry Hanson of Eveleth Minnesota
has been on a roll this season at the Proctor Speedway. Sunday
night August 21 Hanson picked up his fifth feature victory of
the season here.
Canadian driver Joel Cryderamn who has a couple of feature
wins at the speedway, drew the pole position for the 20 lap
event. Cryderman got a great jump at the green flag but caution
flags would keep the field close throughout. All the caution
periods occurred during the first half of the race and kept the
competitors close. Cryderman was sailing along with several car
lengths on whomever happened to be in second that lap as there
was a strong battle going on for position early on. Cryderman
looked as though he might have the feature win wrapped up but he
reckoned without Hanson's knowledge of the speedway.
Hanson started ninth, inside the fifth row and with few laps
remaining grabbed second from Danny Young and began to close on
Cryderman using the high groove and as the white flag waved,
shot around Cryderman to lead the final lap and take the win.
Cryderman held on to second over Young, Jeff Broking and Darrell
Nelson.
The WISSOTA Modified 20 lap feature went from a first lap
caution for a Tim Danielson spin until there were three laps
remaining to have another caution flag. Between cautions Kelly
Estey led every lap as first Duane Dale then Darrell Nelson
hounded him for the lead. While Dale was the hound chasing the
hare, Don Copp, Nelson and Jason Miller were in a tight skirmish
for third. As they closed up some on the back markers the
quarters became tight and Copp ran into the back of John Baltich
spinning him under the flag stand. Copp was sent to the rear and
elected not to continue. With three circuits remaining, Estey
fended off Nelson for the win. Miller, Jeff Lien and Jayme
Lautigar rounded out the top five. Danielson rebounded from his
first lap spin to finish sixth, Jody Bellefeuille seventh and
14th starting Ken Hron finishing seventh. Cory Jorgenson and Rod
Heitala finished ninth and tenth.
Johnny Erickson skated by Ryan Aho just before the mid point
of the 20 lap WISSOTA Super Stock feature and took the win.
Three caution flags, or four if you count the no start for
debris after the first caution flag, slowed the action. Mike
Bellefeuille led in the early going but first time visitor
Charlie Weber took the lead, then lost it on the restart after
the early debris call when Bellefeuille got the better start.
Shortly thereafter while running second, Weber pulled off the
second turn and out of the race. Behind Bellefeuille was Aho
with the departure of Weber while Erickson, Scott Lawrence and
Jay Kuras battled for third. For the final few laps the
competitors were strung out around the speedway and Erickson
began to stretch out his lead on Aho. At the checkered flag it
was Erickson with the win and the sweep over Aho, Bellefeuille,
Lawrence and Kuras.
Mark Kangas worked his way from the fourth row to the second
spot behind leader Nick Lavato who had taken the point when
leader Greg Chesley gave up the lead on the restart after the
second caution flag. Chesley compounded his problems by slipping
off turn two and rejoining the fray after losing several
positions. Lavato maintained the led for the ensuing laps but
showed a little slip as he ran the top groove on the very edge
giving Kangas a look inside for the lead. The final slip by
Lavato gave Kangas enough room to skate by with D J Severin who
was having a great run from 10th also taking advantage. Kangas
went on to win his first feature of the season at the speedway.
Severin, Lavato, Willy Thompson, a sixth row starter and pole
sitter Justin Jones rounding out the top five.
Scott Larsen led in the early going of the 15 lap Pure Stock
feature with Tom Morinville, Al Rapp, Glen Dammer and
point leader Jim McClellan close behind. Morinville, Rapp and
Larsen went three wide for the lead with Morinville grabbing the
spot. The next time by Rapp had the lead at the line and
Morinville was second. Larsen, Dammer and McClellan were three
wide for second. The mid point of the contest was quickly
reached with Rapp leading Morinville.
After the only caution flag of the event for a Travis Zollar
spin, Morinville had the lead over Rapp with McClellan
trying to get around both of them. McClellan took second from
Rapp and moved along side Morinville. McClellan was faster on
parts of the track and Morinville quicker on others. Morinville
was quicker off turn four and took the win over McClellan with
Rapp, Jesse Ogston and Dammer in the top five.
