EMERSON, NELSON, TARDY, LAVATO AND DAVIS NOTCH PROCTOR
OPENER WINS
By Jerry O'Brien
123 cars in five divisions, clear but cool weather and a
smooth, fast race track and an appearance at intermission by
three time champion Monster Truck Bare Foot made for one of
the best Proctor Speedway openers in recent memory. After
the qualifying heats were run it was feature time.
First up were the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds with Wayne Engen
grabbing the early lead from the front row. The front runners
quickly fell into a single file order through the top ten ahead
of a gaggle of cars fighting for 11th. Engen and the rest of the
front four including Nick Lavato, Monte Hall, and Greg Chesley
broke away form the rest as the half way mark was quickly
reached. Just past the midpoint Engen suddenly fell off the pace
and rode slowly around the top and out of the event leaving the
point to Lavato. A couple of laps later Chesley spun in turn one
trying to take second from Hall. No caution was thrown and
Chesley was out of the hunt ending up with a DNF in 16th place.
Lavato went on to record feature number one over Hall, Tom
Smart, Mark Kangas and Willie Thompson.
The WISSOTA Late Models were next for their 20 lap main
event. It was a shaky start for the "Big Dogs" as pole
sitter Danny Young was judged to have jumped the start and was
put back to the second row for the second try. Caley Emerson
inherited the pole and made the most of the opportunity as he
would lead every lap for the popular win. It soon became obvious
that there was no traction in the top groove as everyone was
stuck on the bottom. With restarts lined up side by side until
halfway, the only chance to make a move appeared to be during
those restarts. Only two caution periods marred the run, the
first for John Massingill who spun at the half way mark in turn
four after running in the third spot up to that point. The
second caution came with three laps remaining when DC Miller
looped in the same spot. Front running Danny Young and John
Massingill were out at this point leaving Emerson to fend off
Darrell Nelson, Jeff broking, Andrew McKay and Jeff Provinzino
for the win.
Kevin Montieth started the WISSOTA Modified feature from the
pole and quickly took the lead over Jad Carlson, Darrell Nelson,
Tim Danielson and Don Copp. Modified rookie Riley Matthews
crossed up in the first turn stacking up several cars, mortally
wounded in the mele was the number 37 of perennial contender
Kelly Estey. Three more caution flags would fly before the half
way point. Montieth was able to hold on to the lead at each
restart as passing was at a premium but Copp was able to take
advantage of Montieth to squirt past into the lead. At the half
way point it was Copp, Carlson, Nelson Montieth who had been
shuffled back to fourth and Danielson. Shortly thereafter a
Jamie Davis spin set up a shootout between the veteran drivers
Copp and Nelson who had gotten by Carlson into second. As the
field was headed toward the third turn for the restart, Copp
pulled into the infield as he was unable to get the transmission
into high gear. With Copp in the infield Nelson cruised to the
win over Carlson, Montieth, Jeff Lien and Duane Dale.
Jeff Tardy weathered a four caution slowed 15 lap WISSOTA
Super Stock feature to take his first win. Starting from the
pole, Tardy took the lead with Sam Skalsky, Kyle Peterlin, Jay
Kuras and Ryan Aho trailing. A caution and two failures to get
started later, Tardy still held the lead over Skalsky, Peterlin,
Jay Kintner and Aho. Half way through Tardy still led with
Kintner now second ahead of Skalsky, Peterlin and Aho. Aho moved
up to the top groove in an effort to find some traction, but
despite two more caution flags, he could never make it work and
lost a position to finish sixth. Tardy held on to take the win
over Kintner, Skalsky, Peterlin and Kuras.
Butch Butcher had a great drive from the seventh row to
finish seventh. Ricky Davis was coming off a first time feature
win Saturday and was looking for his second career win in a row.
He wasted little time blasting through for the lead from inside
the second row with Rick Kesty following through to second with
Chad Carlson third, Pete Ciurleo fourth and Tom Morinville
fifth. The laps quickly went by as there were no caution flags
for the entire event. At the mid point Davis was holding off
Carlson who had moved into second past Kestey. Carlson caught up
with Davis and the two battled for the top spot with Carlson
edging into the lead off turn two. Carlson looked to have
the win sewed up but faltered and pulled off leaving Davis with
the lead and the eventual win over Kestey, Glen Dammer, Pete
Ciurleo and Morinville.
