HANSON, ESTEY, JOHNSON, KANGAS,
MORINVILLE FIRED UP AT PROCTOR SUNDAY
By Jerry O'Brien - 5-28-06
Track conditions were excellent and the weather was clear as
the Proctor Speedway held their second race of the season. Winners were Harry Hanson,
WISSOTA Late Models, Kelly Estey, WISSOTA Modifieds, Mark Kangas, WISSOTA Midwest
Modifieds, Tim Johnson, WISSOTA Super Stocks and Tom Morinville, Proctor Pure Stocks. Veteran Tim McMann led the 20 car WISSOTA Late Model feature
to the green flag with Danny Youngand Harry Hanson quickly up to battle for the
lead. By the five lap mark McMann was still holding off Young and Hanson but a caution flag
slowed the action. On the restart Young grabbed the lead away from McMann another caution flag
for a three car pileup in turn four gave the lead back to McMann. Young promptly regained
the point and at the half way point of the 20 lap event Young led Hanson, McMann, Kevin Carlson
and Steve Vesel. On the move from his 6th row starting spot was Darrell Nelson who slipped
past McMann into third. Hanson pressured Young for the lead and zipped past for the lead.
With five laps to go Hanson pulled away from Young for the win.
Nelson was third followed by
Vesel and McMann. Jeff Wood pulled out to a huge lead at the outset of the
WISSOTA Modified feature but what would prove to be the only caution flag of the 20 lap
event flew when a marker tire was rooted out onto the track with seven laps complete. The
restart proved to be Wood's downfall as Estey blasted to the lead and had little trouble pulling away
form Wood while Duane Dale, Don Copp, Dean Yrjanainen and Darrell Nelson put on a stirring
battle for the third spot. Nelson arrived in this battle from the 6th
row while Copp moved up
from row number three. Estey held off Wood for the win followed by Dale,
Copp and Yrjanainen. Tim Johnson won out in a hard fought WISSOTA Super Stock main
event which was marred by eight caution flags. Johnson moved his way forward
from the third row to battle with Peter Jokinen and Dave Flynn for the entire 20 laps. Johnson
vanquished Jokinen on one of the restarts and Flynn got past Jokinen also to finish in the
runner up spot. Fast movers were current WISSOTA National point leader Kyle Peterlin who raced his way
from the 6th row to finish fourth while Scott Lawrence worked his way from the 17th
starting spot to finish fifth. Four caution flags marred the 20 lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified
feature as Mark Kangas fought his way through the strong field from the outside of
the fifth row to take the lead and the win. Nick Lavato started to the inside of Kangas but a row
behind worked his way up to second but could not track down the swift Kangas. Outside pole
sitter Rod Heitala finished a strong third over Greg Chesley who came from the next to last row in the
20 car field while Willy Thompson rounded out the top five. The Pure Stock main event had everyone holding their breaths
as the action was four deep through the turns at the beginning of the event. Four caution
flags slowed the action as Al Rapp looked as though he might get a feature win but Tom
Morinville had other ideas and took over the lead just afer the mid point. Rick Kesty worked his way
forward from the sixth row to battle with Morinville but Morinville was equal to the task and
pulled away in the waning laps for the win. Rapp, Tony Ciurleo and Allan Orice finished in the top
five. Results:
