PROVINZINO SWEEPS PROCTOR LATE MODEL
ACTION
Jones Wins First Career WISSOTA Modified Feature
By Jerry O'Brien 6-4-06
Jeff Provinzino of Hibbing, MN recorded a sweep in the
WISSOTA Late Model division at the Proctor Speedway Sunday
night. Pole sitter Provinzino lost ground through the first half
of the 20 lap WISSOTA Late Model feature as front row mate
veteran Tim McMann was the class of the field past the half way
mark. Danny Young, up and comer Nick Musel, Darrell Nelson and
Darin Meierotto battled with Provinzino behind the fleet McMann
but Provinzino came on strong in the last third of the event and
slipped past McMann to take the lead pulling away convincingly
in the waning stages to take the win. Young also rebounded in
the late stages to take second with McMann holding on for third
over Nelson with Caley Emerson.
Justin Jones of Onamia, MN made the big move to the WISSOTA
Modifieds from the Midwest Modifieds and took the measure of the
veteran field for his first career WISSOTA Modified victory.
Despite four caution flags that kept the field bunched in the 20
lap event, Jones was able to fend off the competition and pull
away each time. Don Copp came from his row five starting spot to
win the battle fro the second spot. Though Copp was able to cut
into Jones' lead slightly he was unable to stay with him after a
late race restart as Jones was equal to the task pulling away
for a convincing win and his first WISSOTA Modified career
sweep. Winning the third place battle was Darrell Nelson over an
aggressive Jeff Wood with pole sitter Jody Bellefeuille hanging
on in the top five.
Defending track champion and defending WISSOTA Super Stock
National Champion Ryan Aho of Chisholm, MN surged past early
leader Scott Lawrence after the only restart of the 20 lap
feature and cruised to a runaway victory. While Aho was the
constant in the equation and completely dominated the rest of
the way, positions behind him in the top five or six seemed to
be different every time by the flag stand. The battle for the
number two spot included Lawrence, Jeff Tardy, Kyle Peterlin,
Mike Bellefeuille and Jay Kuras. When the checkered flag fell
Aho was nearly a straight away ahead of second place Tardy while
Lawrence, Peterlin and Bellefeuille rounded out the top
five.
Erick Thiesse of Brainerd, MN put together a heat win and his
first feature win in a WISSOTA Midwest Modified at the Proctor
Speedway Sunday night. Greg Chesley was the dominating force
through more than two thirds of the 20 lap feature coming from
the third row quickly to have the lead by lap five. Pole sitter
Thiesse faded back to run fourth in the early going using some
strong moves and a couple of caution periods to stay in
contention. By the half way point Thiesse ran second to Chesley.
Also moving well on the speedway was Mark Kangas who had started
13th and by the mid point was in the top five and was third by
the three quarters mark. Chesley enjoyed a several car length
lead with Thiesse back up to second but the final caution flag
put him on Chesley's back bumper. At the green flag Thiesse
dogged Chesley finally racing past into the lead with four
circuits remaining. Chesley, Kangas, Jeremy Hall and Monte Hall
rounded out the top five.
Rick Kesty won the 15 lap Proctor Pure Stock feature after a
race long battle with Jon McKinnon, Miles Weske, and Nick Baker.
Opening night winner Ricky Davis worked his way into the top
five form his 10th starting spot. Baker led in the early going
but McKinnon held the lead at the mid point as two caution flags
slowed the action. With five circuits remaining Kesty took the
point and held it to the checkered flag. McKinnon, Weske, Davis
and Baker rounded out the top five. It was also a sweep for
Kesty.
