HANSON, NELSON WIN LATE MODEL & MODIFIED FEATURES AT
PROCTOR
By Jerry O'Brien
6-18-06
The WISSOTA Late Model feature at the
Proctor Speedway Sunday night June 18 was shortened by eight
laps when the time limit ran out. Much of the time was taken up
trying to get a lap in the books as multiple caution flags
reduced the 20 car field to an even dozen as six wrecks and
spins put eight cars pit side. All of these incidents
overshadowed a great run by Harry Hanson from the third row to
battle with early leader and pole starter Darin Meierotto.
Racing finally got started with Meierotto in the lead followed
by Tim McMann, Jeff Provinzino, Caley Emerson and Aaron Lillo as
the front runners. Hanson held the lead at the ten lap mark but
the seventh caution flag flew when John Massingill slid off turn
one. With ten laps complete and the time limit expired,
officials called for a green/white/checkered two lap dash.
Hanson held off Meierotto over the two circuits with Provinzino,
Nick Musel and McMann rounding out the top five.
Front row starter Paul Schultz led the 22
car WISSOTA Modified feature under the green flag with Bob
Broking, Rick Cannata, Jeff Lien and Tim Danielson trailing.
Broking got by Schultz and held on to the lead to the half way
mark but the third and final caution flag appeared after Lien
and Schultz collided in turn one. Darrell Nelson who had started
in the sixth row, had worked his way forward and was on
Broking's bumper at the green flag and shot past for the lead
winning the 20 lap feature in a walk off. Broking held on to
second while Don Copp from 12th, John Reini and Jody
Bellefeuille finished in the top five. Lien rebounded from his
ticket for causing a caution flag to appear to finish 10th.
Luke Hines became a first time winner in
the Midwest Modified division at the Proctor Speedway taking
home the hardware in the 20 lap event. Four caution flags kept
the action close and in the early going there was a great four
car battle between front row starters Monty Hall and Jeremy Hall
along with Hines and Al McDougall. Jeremy Hall squirted out of
the pack to the lead but Hines also burst free and challenged
Hall while Monty Hall, McDougall and Josh Loucks battled for
third. With seven laps in Hines grabbed the lead with Jeremy and
Monty third and fourth and McDougall fifth ahead of Loucks while
fourth row starter Chad Larson was headed for the top five.
Larson kept chipping away at the front runners while Hines was
in control of the race up front. One of the caution flags saw
Larson make a good run to second and the final caution flag gave
him a chance to take his first win as it put him right on Hines'
bumper. He was unable to catch Hines in the remaining laps
finishing second as Hines won his first feature at the speedway.
Larson, the Halls, Jeremy and Monty and Willy Thompson finished
in the top five. Former feature winners Nick Lavato and Mark
Kangas rebounded from trips to the back of the pack to finish
6th and 13th respectively.
Dave Mass quickly shot from the second row
in the 20 lap Super Stock feature into a lead he would never
relinquish despite a determined effort by Jeff Tardy. Mass had
little trouble pulling away in the early stages as there was a
fierce four car battle for second raging behind him that
included Art Hyde, Tardy, Kyle Peterlin and Mike Bellefeuille.
Despite being the victim in two of the five caution periods that
slowed the action, Ryan Aho managed to make it up to the fourth
position from 14th and there was a heck of a skirmish between he
and Peterlin for third. Up front Mass had his hands full with
Tardy who was all over him for the lead. Mass was able to hang
on for his second consecutive feature win at the speedway.
Tardy, Aho, Peterlin and Scott Lawrencetrailed Mass across the
line in the top five.
There were plenty of on track fireworks as
the Proctor Pure Stocks wrapped up the racing for the evening
with their 15 lap feature. Pete Ciurleo won his first career
Pure Stock main event with a flag to flag win from the outside
of the front row. Three caution flags and a red flag marred the
event. On the first lap a crash in the first turn put second
place point man Ricky Davis in the pits with an injured hand.
The second caution came just a lap later when Allen Price
slipped of turns three and four. Price was in for more trouble
not of his making as Ciurleo led off over Dan Larsen, Richard
Dezlak, newcomer Nathan Dees and Steve Kresal.
Dees
suffered a right rear flat tire and slowed suddenly in mid pack
causing cars to scatter. Price was turned sideways in the fracas
and did a couple of barrel rolls down the front stretch. He
climbed uninjured from the wreckage. Another caution flag after
the restart for an errant bumper on the front stretch was the
final slowdown. Point leader Rick Kesty was on his way forward
from the sixth row and made his way to the third spot behind
Larsen, but Ciurleo was not to be denied that first win as he
held the two of them over the final circuits for the victory.
Rounding out the top kafive were Glen Dammer andTom Morinville
from 13th.
