McMANN SWEEPS PROCTOR LATE MODEL SHOW
Mid Seasons Champions Decided
By Jerry O'Brien 6-25-06
Tim McMann showed why he is one of the best Late Model pilots
around and can still master the Proctor Speedway. Starting the
20 lap feature from the outside of the front row, McMann beat
pole sitter and last week's winner Harry Hanson to the green
flag and left several other drivers to squabble amongst
themselves for the second spot. McMann pulled out a wide lead
over Hanson in the early going as the event gave signs that it
might go flag to flag without a stoppage. Behind McMann Hanson
was fending off A J Diemel, Jeff Broking, Darrell Nelson and
Terry Casey for the second spot. Hanson began to cut into
McMann's lead bringing Diemel along and it was a three way
battle for the lead. With a dozen laps finished the first and
only caution flag occurred when Danny Young slid off turn one.
McMann was able to pull out a slight lead on the restart as
Hanson was busy fighting off Diemel. Just behind that duo Casey
and Broking traded slide jobs at the opposite ends of the track
and Casey prevailed for the fourth spot. As the white flag
appeared with McMann safely in the lead, Diemel tried for second
but Hanson held him off. Casey and Nelson finished behind in
fourth and fifth.
Kelly Estey was again the class of the field. Coming off his
big Como Modified Series win the previous Tuesday, Estey beat
Jeff Lien to the point from the outside of the front row and
weathered seven caution flags to take the Modified feature win.
Once again a feature race was shortened due to the expiration of
the time limit. Estey took a dominant win in the 20 lap event
though Darrell Nelson was within a couple of car lengths after
wrestling second from Jeff Wood. Don Copp finished third, Wood
fourth and Justin Jones fifth.
Ryan Aho outdistanced Curt Myers to win the Super Stock
feature grabbing the lead at the green flag over Kyle Peterlin.
Myers worked his way forward from the fourth row and took over
the second spot from Peterlin past the half way point in the 20
lap event. Aho dominated the event leading every lap despite
three caution flags that slowed the action and closed up the
field. Almost unnoticed in the early going was Sam Skalsky's
great run as he snaked his way through the pack in search of the
front runners. Skalsky won the B main and started the feature
from the outside of row eight in the 20 car field. Aho, the
defending track champion won his first feature in a while over
Myers. Skalsky's great run ended up in third place while
Peterlin and Jay Kuras finished out the top five. Tracking
Skalsky through the pack was Donnie Lofdahl who had finished
behind Skalsky in the B feature and started 17th, finishing
sixth. Jeff Tardy ran in the top five until he was charged with
a caution flag which sent him to the rear.
Nick Lavato led most of the Midwest Modified feature from his
pole position starting spot but Greg Chesley was coming to the
front from his 11th starting spot. Lavato's closest competition
was Wayne Engen but Engen dropped out with eight laps remaining
leaving second to Mark Kangas. At this point Chesley had made
his way into the third spot and grabbed second from Kangas.
Chesley then overtook Lavato and took the lead with five laps
remaining. Kangas also slipped by Lavato into second with Deven
Van House and D J Severin finishing fourth and fifth
respectively.
Rick Kesty added to his point lead with another win and a
sweep in the Proctor Pure Stock division. Kesty kept ahead of
friendly rival Ricky Davis who was looking for his third feature
at the speedway this season. Jon McKinnon hung around in the top
three for the entire 15 laps and nipped Davis for third on the
final circuit. Glen Dammer and Tom Morinville finished in the
top five.
