EMERSON WINS SECOND LATE MODEL FEATURE
Nelson, Aho, Chesley, Dammer Feature Winners

By Jerry O'Brien

Caley Emerson of Grand Rapids won his second WISSOTA Late Model feature of the season at the Proctor Speedway. Todd Gehl began the 20 lap event from the pole and quickly took the lead while Emerson wasted little time moving up to the second spot with John Massingill, Tim McMann, Kevin Carlson and Darrell Nelson trailing. Emerson grabbed the lead over Gehl and Carlson came to life in the bottom groove and blasted by Nelson and Massingill. At the half way point Emerson held the lead over Gehl with 9th starting Jeff Provinzino on the prowl an dup to third. Provinzino was closing on the two front runners but brought out the only caution flag of the event with a spin off turn four. He was sent to the rear and decided to retire from the event. With five laps remaining after the restart Nelson worked the high groove to sail into the second spot but was unable to track down Emerson in the final laps. Emerson took the win over top five finishers Gehl, Tim McMann and Harry Hanson.

The WISSOTA Modified feature got off to a ragged start as on the initial circuit Rick Cannata apparently bobbled in a tight pack of cars sending several scrambling. Involved in the accident were Joey Galloway who's car sustained significant damage to the rear of the car. He drove off to the pits with all the rear protection stripped away and the fuel cell nearly dragging on the track. The next try at a start was even worse as Cory Jorgenson and Jad Carlson slammed together in the first turn with Jorgenson turning sideways to oncoming traffic. Clint Larson had no where to go and side slammed Jorgenson in the driver's door. Neither man were hurt though Jorgenson was checked by Paramedics after walking to the ambulance. This red flag would be the final stoppage in the 20 lap event, both incidents occurring during attempts to get the first lap in. At the green flag Jeff Wood quickly moved into the lead followed by Jayme Lautigar, Jody Bellefeuille, Duane Dale and Don Copp. 12th starting Darrell Nelson was on his way forward and in the waning laps joined Copp in tracking down Wood. In a thrilling move off the second turn Copp and Nelson blew by Wood high and low with Nelson coming out on top to take the win over Copp with Wood, Jody Bellefeuille and Jeff Lien from 14th to fifth.

Ryan Aho started deep in the WISSOTA Super Stock field outside the 12th row and worked his way into the lead. Two caution flags in the first half of the 20 lap feature shuffled the field and at the mid point Aho was dueling with leader Jay Kuras door to door with Kyle Peterlin in third, newcomer Josh Anderson fourth and Jeff Tardy fifth. A final caution period occurred when Mike Bellefeuille went for an induced spin. After some confusion Bellefeuille was restored to his place in line. By this time the time limit was nearing so a three lap dash to the finish ensued. Aho took the win over Kuras, Peterlin, Tardy and Anderson.

Greg Chesley used his pole starting spot to good advantage as he stayed out front despite three caution flags. The first caution flew on lap one when cars behind the leader tried a four wide maneuver through turn three that didn't work. At the green flag Chesley led Jeremy Hall Deven Van House, Greg Chesley and Jimmy Latvala but a D J Severin spin and retirement brought the field under caution for the second time. On the restart Chesley held the lead over Mark Kangas, Latvala, Van House and Hall but what would prove to be the final caution flag appeared when sixth running Wayne Engen bunted Hall off the back stretch. Under way once again, Chesley raced to a huge lead over Kangas with a very fast Nick Lavato taking over third, Latvala fourth and Van House fifth. Chesley completed the run leading every lap whith Lavato second, Latvala third, Van House fourth and Engen rebounding to fifth after being sent to the rear.

Glen Dammer finally won his first Pure Stock feature after several years of trying. Putting together a strong run was Ricky Davis. Davis led early but had to settle for second. Tom Morinville, Skeeter Estey and Al Rapp finished in the top five. Up and coming driver Steve Christman raced from 20th to sixth in the time limit shortened event. Point leader Rick Kesty suffered a flat tire and fell out of the event in the closing laps.
