NELSON DOUBLES AT PROCTOR
Morinville Wins Third Pure Stock Feature Of The Weekend
By Jerry O'Brien

Darrell Nelson continued his dominance at the Proctor Speedway Sunday night as he won both the WISSOTA Late Model feature and the WISSOTA Modified main event. Jeff Tardy took the measure of the WISSOTA Super Stock field while Justin Jones was the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature winner. Tom Morinville won his third feature of the weekend in the Pure Stock division including a Saturday night special that was worth over $750 to the Duluth driver.

Steve Vesel led the first four circuits of the 20 lap Late Model feature before Tom Waseleski, Sr assumed the point on lap five. Darrell Nelson started inside the fourth row and was running third ahead of Jeff Provinzino and pole sitter Mike Rich. Nelson slipped by Vesel into second and began to pressure Waseleski but it took until the final circuit for Nelson to make the strong move for the lead and the win. Waseleski held on to the runner up position with Provinzino past Vesel for third and Harry Hanson finished fifth.

In the 20 lap Modified feature, Nelson again started from the fourth row and hung around the battle for the lead between Jayme Lautigar, Jeff Lien who led several laps, Don Copp and Jody Bellefeuille. Four caution flags kept things tight for the entire race and, in the late going, Nelson streaked through to take the point but the final caution flag set up a four lap dash to the checkered flag and the outcome was still in doubt. Nelson was able to prevail over Lautigar, Copp, Paul Schultz who ran in the top five in the middle to late stages, and double duty driver Justin Jones who came from 10th to fifth.

Jeff Tardy of Hibbing came from the third row to take the lead from Steve Van House on the second lap and held off a persistent defending track champion Ryan Aho for the win. The 20 lap event went 18 circuits before Donnie lofdahl slowed and stalled in the first turn. Aho took a shot at the win during the two lap shootout but Tardy was able to hold him of for the win. Eric Nelson ran in the top three throughout the event and made it a race as he, and Aho battled for second. Sam Skalsky and Kyle Peterlin were a part of the close battle up front and finished in that order.

It was a big night for Justin Jones of Onamia, Mn. After racing to a fifth place finish in the WISSOTA Modified feature, Jones then proceeded to once again come from the fifth row to win the 20 lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Six caution flags and a red flag for an under hood fire in Deven Van House's ride kept the field bunched. Exactly half of the 20 car field was still on the track including several who were wreck survivors. Pole sitter Bart Porter led early from the pole but Greg Chesley soon took over the point with Chais Eliason, Monty Hall, Jones and point leader Nick Lavato trailing. Hall took the lead just at the half way point but faded after a caution flag. Jones assumed the lead over Chesley with Hall slipping to third. The red flag for the Van House incident set up a green/white/checkered finish. Jones was able to stave off Lavato for the win with Chesley, Jimmy Latvala from the fourth row and Barry Smith who was in the top five or six the entire event, rounding out the top five.

Tom Morinville won his third feature of the weekend coming from the fifth row to take the win in the non stop 15 lap Pure Stock main event. Rich Dezlak ran perhaps his best career race to finish second while Skeeter Estey was third Al Rapp fourth and point leader Rick Kesty fifth.

As this is written, a protest is under way in the Pure Stock division but all other feature finishes are official.
