DOAR DEMOLISHES COMO SERIES MODIFIED FIELD
New Richmond WI Driver Takes Byholm Backup Car to Dominating Win
By Jerry O'Brien
"There was nothing official about it" said Pat Doar
when asked how the ride in Bill Byholm's backup number 4
Modified came about. "He just said hey, want to drive my
other car in the Como Series'? "and here we are"! (In
victory lane).
Doar started the 30 lap $1000 to win Modified feature from
the pole position by virtue of his win in the Taco John's Pole
Dash. The dash finish determined the first five rows for the
feature event. Flanking Doar was Modified standout Dave Cain of
Corcoran, MN who shot into the lead and headed the first two
circuits before Doar gathered it up and zipped by to a lead he
would never give up. Doar was dominant and built up a straight
away lead over Cain who was alone in the runner up spot. Behind
those two battling hard for third were Dean Yrjanainen, Jeff
Spacek, Kelly Estey and Jeff Lien with Brad Hanson and Jody
Bellefeuille trailing that group a short distance behind. Doar
continued to pull away from Cain while the battle raged behind
them. Moving forward into the top ten from the 19th starting
spot was Joey Jensen while up front Yrjanainen broke free of the
third place skirmish and began to cut into Cain's second place
lead.
The first caution flag flew on lap 23 when Jensen who was
ninth and moving forward, slipped a wheel off the top of turn
four and spun. On the restart Cain had a run on Doar and it
looked as though he might take back the lead he'd been chasing
since the third lap. Doar was able to fend him off and pull out
a slight lead until the action was slowed when Al Uotinen spun
in turn four setting up a two lap shootout. Doar was able to
hold Cain off for the remaining circuits with Kelly Estey
getting the better of Yrjanainen at the line for third. Byholm
and Spacek finished in the top five.
Harry Hanson started the WISSOTA Late Model feature from the
fifth row and shot into the lead with a bold move on the restart
after the fourth caution flag slowed the action. From there
Hanson pulled away over the last five circuits for his third
feature win of the season on the 3/8ths oval. Jeff Provinzino
jumped into the lead from the second row at the outset and led
the first seven laps with Terry Casey running second. Behind the
lead duo was a great battle for third between Tommy Waseleski,
Jr, Darin Meierotto, Tommy Waseleski, Sr, Jeff Broking, Tim
McMann, Caley Emerson and Danny Young. The first caution flag
brought Provinzino back to Casey and he made the most of his
chance as he flew by Provinzino only to have the caution flag
again appear. With 13 laps to go Casey again got the better of
Provinzino on the reatart and took over the point, a position he
held until just after the fourth caution flag when Hanson, who
was now third bolted past both Provinzino and Casey and pulled
away over the final six laps for his third feature win of the
season at the Speedway. Casey held onto second while Waseleski,
Jr got by both Meierotto and Provinzino for third. Meierotto
maintained fourth while Provinzino slipped to fifth.
Dave Flynn was looking for his first career feature win at
the speedway and used his pole position starting spot to lead
the first dozen circuits of the 20 lap feature for WISSOTA Super
Stocks. Flynn had the race well in hand and was pulling away
from the rest when disaster struck. Some sort of mechanical
gremlin felled the number 29F as he suddenly slowed off turn
four and pulled off the track. Flynn's demise left Jeff Tardy in
sight of his second consecutive feature win and he made the most
of it holding off fellow Iron Rangers Kyle Peterlin and Ryan Aho
for the win. Aho and Peterlin had come through from the fourth
and fifth rows to contend while Eric Nelson turned in another
strong run to finish fourth. Jay Kuras was in the battle all
race long and finished fifth in the event which went to the
checkered flag with only a first lap caution to slow the pack.
Louie Meglen started the Pure Stock 15 lap feature inside the
fourth row and hung around the top five until toward the end
when the final of two caution flags for leader Glen Dammer's
mechanical problems left him in a position to get the win.
Meglen was running second to leader Tom Morinville when the
caution appeared and used an outside move on Morinville to grab
the lead and race away for his first ever career feature win.
Morinville, Tony Ciurleo, Jon McKinnon and Skeeter Estey
finished in the top five.
