NELSON DOUBLES AT PROCTOR
By Jerry O'Brien

Darrell Nelson put up a double feature win night Sunday August 20 at the Proctor Speedway. Nelson won the WISSOTA Late Model feature after a stout battle with Tim McMann and Jeff Provinzino. He then swept the action in the WISSOTA Modified division with a heat win and a strong run to the checkered flags in the 20 lap feature. It was his fifth Modified feature of the season as well as his second Late Model main event win. Jeff Tardy won his fourth WISSOTA Super Stock feature of the season while Greg Chesley also won his fourth of the season in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Pete Ciurleo also became a multiple winner as he took his second win in the Pure Stock division.

Tim McMann who has one feature win to his credit this season at the speedway took off from the pole position and led well past the half way mark in the 20 lap feature. Behind him Darrell Nelson and Jeff Provinzino renewed their competition and closed on McMann leaving a gaggle of cars battling in their wake for fifth. Nelson took advantage of a lapped car to slip past McMann for the lead with Provinzino following him through. Provinzino shadowed Nelson for the remaining laps but Nelson held him off for the win. Provinzino, and McMann were second and third with Jeff Broking breaking out of the pack into fourth and point leader Harry Hanson rounding out the top five.

Going into the night's action in the WISSOTA modified division Darrell Nelson held a 15 point lead over Don Copp. When the smoke cleared after the 20 lap feature nothing had changed except the point totals as Nelson was the winner with Copp second. Nelson was second in his heat and Copp won his so the point battle remains tight going into the final night next week. Four caution flags with nine of 20 in the books helped thin out the herd, perhaps the most notable was perennial contender Kelly Estey who headed the list of DNF's that totaled nine of 19 starters. In the early going Nelson had all he wanted from Jody Bellefeuille who has really come into his own in the ‘06 season. Bellefeuille showed no fear as he battled wheel to wheel with the veteran Nelson for several laps before slowing late in the event pulling into the infield. Nelson ran away from Copp in the late stages to take the win with Jeff Hart third, Jeff Lien fourth and Nick Nelson coming home fifth.

Robbie Copper of Superior has shown steady improvement over the season in the Super Stock division and found himself starting the 20 lap feature from the inside of row number two. After a no start when outside pole sitter Art Hyde lost power and stalled, Cooper shot into the lead with Sam Skalsky hot on his heels. Pole sitter Doug Woodhull ran third with point leader Kyle Peterlin and Eric Nelson close behind. Cooper held onto the lead in the early going before Skalsky took over the point. Peterlin went to second while Cooper had Jeff Tardy and Ryan Aho to worry about from the third spot. Skalsky led until past the mid point when Tardy took over. Cooper was still third as Peterlin and Aho squabbled for fourth. Tardy won his fourth feature of the season ahead of Skalsky. Peterlin and Aho got by Cooper for third and fourth.

Greg Chesley lined up ninth in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature but it was Mid Mod rookie Randy Vezina to the early lead over Mark Kangas. Kangas over cooked the turn trying to challenge for the lead and slid into the infield bringing out the first of three caution flags. Monty Hall gained the lead at the green flag with Tom Smart second. A lap later Chais Eliason stalled on the top of turn one bringing out the caution flag once again. Hall again led off in the lead over Smart, Vezina and newcomer Jim White. Another caution flag quickly appeared when point leader Nick Lavato suffered broken front suspension parts, attrition was high in the first few laps as well before the half way point with six of 20 starters sidelined by lap four of 20. Hall continued to lead as the half way mark was reached with Greg Chesley now second. Behind them lined up Smart, Vezina, Deven Van House, Jesse Ogston, Chad Larson, a persistent Barry Smith and Jeremy Hall. Championship contender Kangas also dropped out at this point. Just past half way Monty Hall faltered and also dropped out leaving the race to Chesley who went on to take his fourth feature win of the season. Van House, Ogston and Larson finished in the top five while Smith finished sixth despite pitting twice for tire changes under caution.

Pete Ciurleo won his second Pure Stock feature of the season after a hard battle with glen Dammer. Tom Morinville took the early lead from the outside of the front row with Al Rapp, Don Follett, Dan Larsen, Jon McKinnon and Pete Ciurleo following. Morinville's lead was erased when the only caution flag of the event flew when point leader Ricky Davis was spun out by Larsen while running fifth. Ciurleo grabbed the lead after the restart and battled with Morinville and Dammer for the lead. Ciurleo and Dammer clashed off the fourth turn for the win over Dammer, Morinville, Davis and McKinnon.
