PROVINZINO, NELSON, LAWRENCE, CHESLEY, SKEETER ESTEY WIN
FEATURES ON PROCTOR CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT
Hanson, Nelson, Peterlin, Lavato and Davis Are Track Season
Champions
By Jerry O'Brien
Harry Hanson of Eveleth, Mn won the track title in the
WISSOTA Late Model division at the Proctor Speedway Sunday
August 27. Going into the night Hanson had a 44 point lead over
Darrell Nelson which effectively sewed up the championship.
Hanson finished the 20 lap feature in fifth two places
behind his challenger Nelson. Jeff Provinzino took advantage of
a caution flag on the initial circuit to blow past Hanson,
Nelson, and Tim McMann taking the lead and driving away from the
pack for the win. Nelson chased after Provinzino but failed to
cut into his lead sufficiently enough to mount a challenge. Jeff
Broking came home third several car lengths back of Nelson while
McMann held off Hanson for fourth while Steve Laursen came from
15th to sixth in preparation for the 34th annual Silver 1000 set
for Thursday August 31.
The WISSOTA Modified point race was to be settled on the
final night as Darrell Nelson held a 16 point lead over Don
Copp. With Justin Jones in third 62 markers back, it would come
down to the final 20 lap feature of the regular season. Nelson
and Copp each won their respective heats so the 16 point
advantage for Nelson did not change as the two started side by
side on the front row. Copp grabbed the lead at the start after
a caution with no laps in brought about a restart. Nelson soon
gathered it back up and the two ran wheel to wheel for a couple
of laps before Nelson got the edge off the fourth turn, took
over the lead and just drove away from Copp until another
caution flag just past the ten lap mark brought Copp back to
Nelson's bumper. Nelson again drove away from Copp as the cars
were flirting with disaster running in the high groove right on
the edge of the track where one slip meant a trip off the
surface. Running in third was Duane Dale with Nick Nelson fourth
trying to take the third spot. Nelson dived to the inside of
Dale too hard and the two slapped doors resulting in a Nelson
spin and the final caution flag. When racing resumed Nelson
drove away from Copp for his sixth feature win of the season and
the track title. Dale held onto third ahead of Matt Sorenson and
Jeff Wood in the top five.
Entering the WISSOTA Super Stock feature Kyle Peterlin held a
10 point lead over fellow Iron Ranger Jeff Tardy. Tardy took the
lead at the green flag with Jay Kuras, Peterlin, Ryan Aho and
Scott Lawrence following. Kuras grabbed second but Tyler Kintner
brought out the caution flag with a spin in turn one. Kuras got
a great start and shot into the lead over Tardy with Lawrence to
third ahead of Aho, Peterlin and Robbie Cooper. At the half way
point Kuras still led Tardy with Peterlin looking to remain
consistent trying to stay in the top five so as to not let Tardy
gain too many points. It all became a moot point, however, when
Tardy departed with mechanical problems. After a caution flag,
Lawrence shot into the lead and led the rest of the way for his
second feature win of the season. Aho, Kuras, Peterlin and Steve
Estey rounded out the top five. Peterlin's fourth place finish
was enough to give him the 2006 track title. Peterlin had a
consistent season scoring no feature wins but seldom finished
out of the to five.
Greg Chesley made a run at leader Nick Lavato in the Midwest
Modified feature late in the 20 lap event to take his fifth
feature win of the season, but to no avail as Lavato had the
points race wrapped up entering the final night with a 56 point
bulge over second place man Mark Kangas and Chesley who were
tied for second. Deven Van House, Monty Hall and MWM rookie
Randy Vezina rounded out the top five.
Ricky Davis was on the verge of his second Pure Stock
championship as he had won the title at the ABC Raceway on
Saturday night. He and second place man Tony Ciurleo maintained
a 10 point difference going into the 15 lap main event by virtue
of a heat win apiece. Davis led past the half way point but
slipped a bit letting Skeeter Estey through to the point. Davis
seemed to slow a bit more and Glen Dammer and Jon McKinnon got
by toward the finish, Estey won his first feature at the Proctor
Speedway and second of the weekend. Dammer, McKinnon, Davis and
Andrew LaBarge rounded out the top five. LaBarge raced forward
from the 12th starting spot to a top five finish. Davis' fourth
place finish coupled with Ciurleo's slip to 8th was enough to
give Davis the championship.
