NELSON, ESTEY, AHO, CHESLEY, ESTEY TOP PROCTOBER FEST FEATURES
Controversial Finish Decides Super Stock Feature And WISSOTA National Championship

The 2006 edition, the second annual Proctober Fest at the Proctor Speedway, equaled the initial event or perhaps surpassed it. Certainly the weather cooperated more with two great fall days bringing out a stout crowd of fans. Last year's event ended with a controversial finish in the Late Model feature with Darrell Nelson winning after a crash with Jeff Provinzino at the line. This time the controversy was in the Super Stocks with a last lap crash between Ryan Aho and Dave Mass the outcome of which would not only affect the feature win but the WISSOTA National Championship as the Proctober Fest was one of three events that could have an effect on National titles.

The 40 lap, $3000 to win, WISSOTA Late Model feature was set up to be a repeat of the 2005 contentious finish as Jeff Provinzino and Darrell Nelson lined up on the front row. Four caution flags would keep the field bunched somewhat, the first coming on the initial circuit as Jim Carlson stalled on the pit exit road after Provinzino had jumped into the lead. The restart saw Nelson get the hole shot off the high side with Provinzino right there just ahead of Tim McMann, Darin Meierotto, Nelson's team car driven by Nick Musel and Todd Gehl quickly up to sixth from the sixth row. Early on Nelson dominated the action pulling away from Provinzino and quickly reaching the back of the pack. Nelson had some problems working his way around the car of D C Miller allowing Provinzino to close up to a car length. The lapped traffic was helping out Nelson but the red flag flew when Musel and Jeff Massingill tangled on the front stretch eliminating both cars.

With thirteen laps in the order stood at Nelson, Provinzino, McMann, Meierotto and ‘06 track champion Harry Hanson. Just outside the top five were Terry Lillo, John Massingill, George Ledin and Caley Emerson from the B feature. With lapped cars back on the lead lap and at the tail of the field, Provinzino had a clear shot at Nelson at the green flag but couldn't pull off the pass as the track was single lane around the top. Provinzino had plenty of time as all he needed to do was wait until Nelson was slowed by those at the back of the pack. The mid point was quickly reached with Nelson still leading Provinzino, Meierotto, Hanson, McMann, Terry Lillo, Gehl, Massingill, Bill Byholm, Darrell Carlson and Aaron Lillo.

Nelson was in thick traffic surrounded by at least four cars as he tried to pick his way through while keeping a weather eye out for Provinzino. With 24 laps complete the caution flag again appeared for Darrell Carlson who got turned around in turn two. It was a single file restart after half way with Nelson still at the point. The caution again appeared on the restart when John Massingill apparently was knocked off turn two by Bill Byholm who was charged with the incident. Nelson pulled away from Provinzino over the final laps to defend his title this time without controversy. Provinzino, Meierotto, Hanson and McMann rounded out the top five.

Darrell Nelson lined up on the pole for the 35 lap WISSOTA Modified feature next to Kelly Estey. Estey used his high side starting position to take the lead despite two quick cautions both involving Jad Carlson, the first for a spin and the second for a tangle with Travis Zollar. At the second restart Estey shot out to an eight car length lead over Nelson with Jodi Olson, defending champion Don Copp, Jeff Wood, Jayme Lautigar, Ricky Roche, Duane Dale, Brad Hanson and Bill Byholm the third caution flag appeared when Jody Bellefeuille stalled on the pit road while attempting to retire. Estey fended off Nelson on the restart but the caution flag quickly appeared a Rick Rivord went off turn four. The restart came with eleven laps in and Copp got a great restart getting by Olson, Nelson and Estey on the back straight only to run out of real estate in the third turn. He drove off the track and came back on in 10th place. Everyone was running in the high groove as Estey drove off to a huge lead, a full straight away. At the half way point Estey led Nelson, Olson, Wood and Duane Dale. Estey's lead began to diminish when he encountered traffic and Nelson was finally able to have him in his sights about 10 car lengths behind. Estey was trying to clear Rivord and slid up into him letting Nelson close to his rear bumper. Nelson made a banzai move on the final circuit and the two came to the line side by side with Estey getting the win by not much more than a bumper length. Wood, Dale and Olson rounded out the top five.

The WISSOTA Super Stock feature was fraught with tension as the outcome of the race between pole sitter Dave Mass and Ryan Aho who started in the second row right behind him would decide which of those two drivers would be the 2006 WISSOTA National Champion. It was a must win scenario for Aho as Mass was just a single point ahead of him coming into the final weekend. The 25 lap event got off to a ragged start with two quick cautions before a lap could be completed, one for a Steve Thomas spin and the second for an Art Hyde loop. At the green flag Mass led outside pole sitter Robbie Cooper, Aho, Joe Oliver, Jay Kintner and Mike Bellefeuille. Caution number three eliminated the car between Mass and Aho as Cooper ran off turn one. With Cooper out of the picture, Mass and Aho restart side by side. Mass was a bit quicker as Aho looked to the inside trying to find enough grip to get by but Mass held him off. The top groove was quickest but Aho seemed to be able to get a bit of grip in turn two, a little more each time as turn three and four was top groove only. At the half way point it was Mass, Aho, Bellefeuille, Oliver, Kintner, Peterlin, Eric Nelson, Tyler Kintner, George Mattson and Kevin Salin in the top ten.

The caution flag flew just after the mid point when Hyde and Tom Cianni. Aho tried the inside move from the single file restart and got close to making the pass on Mass as Bellefeuille and Oliver gained on the leaders with Oliver going to third. Aho now had a fast Oliver to be concerned about as the leaders came up on lapped traffic. The final caution flag flew when Eric Nelson's good run came to an end with a spin off turn four. The caution flag set up a five lap shoot out for the feature win and the national championship. On the final circuit Aho finally got the bite he needed and cleared Mass for the lead off turn two. Mass dove to the inside in three, appeared to wash up the track in four and knocked Aho off the track on the outside while he spun into the infield. Oliver came through to the checkered flag but the call was made that since Mass had instigated the contact, Aho would be awarded the win with Mass pushed to the back of the pack where he was credited with a 17th place finish. Aho thus wins his third straight WISSOTA National Super Stock title and his fourth over all. Oliver, Bellefeuille, Jay Kintner and Jeff Tardy fifth in a great run from the 32nd starting spot.

Greg Chesley led the 25 lap Midwest Modified feature from flag to flag despite six caution flags. Chesley led off from the pole but Lonny Loeschke was spun by Nick Lavato who was sent to the rear. Chesley opened up a five car length lead over Shawn Phillips after cautions for a Terry Inman spin and a tangle between D J Severin and John Hettinga in turn one. Jimmy Latvala got by Phillips for second with Chais Eliason fourth and Mike Jones fifth. Lavato was on the charge and was up to 11th at this point after starting in the rear. It was a single file restart with 18 laps remaining but caution flag number five quickly appeared when Jeremy Hall slid off turn one. At the green flag Latvala nearly got by Chesley as a very fast Lavato was fourth and quickly took third. At the half way point it was Chesley, Latvala, Lavato, Phillips, Jones, Eliason, Loeschke, Tom Smart, Bill Matzdorf and Jesse Ogston in the top ten. Chesley was facing lapped traffic with Latvala right on his heels when the caution again flew for a Loeschke spin with  eleven laps remaining. Two more quick caution flags affected the outcome in the top ten as Smart slipped off turn four while running eighth and for Jones who was spun by Eliason. Chesley took the win over Latvala, Lavato, Phillips, and Chad Larson.

It was a wild Pure Stock 20 lap feature won by Skeeter Estey who took over the lead from Glen Dammer early on after a sometimes four wide battle with Louis Meglen and Al Rapp. Andy Jarvi was the one to watch as he started 18th and worked his way up to fifth in the opening laps. While Estey ran neck and neck for the lead Jarvi had gone to third. Jarvi then got by Meglen for second and soon got by Estey for the lead. Jarvi and Estey went head to head in a pack of lapped cars and apparently clashed as Estey spun right in the middle of the pack. Jarvi came out of the tangle with a flat tire and pitted to change it. Estey retained the lead and battled with Rapp who had gotten by Meglen for second. LeRae Ralidak ran fourth and Jeremy Fink fifth at this point. With two laps remaining Rapp slid off turn two which scrambled the finish. Estey was able to hold off Meglen for the win with Fink third, 2006 track champion Ricky Davis fourth after starting ninth and Jeff Tormondson in the fifth spot.
