May 27, 2007The Memorial Day weekend two day "Double Dip"
at the Proctor speedway turned out to be a rousing success
with a full grandstand and 163 cars in five divisions set to
compete. The Modified division was the featured division as
it was the first of two days that would lead to Mondays Como
Oil & Propane Modified Series' first of eight races with a
$7500 winners share of the $30,000 point fund at the end for
the top point getter. The 24 car WISSOTA Modified field was
led to the green flag for their 30 lap run by Como Series
defending champion Darrell Nelson with Jeff Hart's number 20
off Nelson's right shoulder. Nelson and hart ran neck and
neck down the back stretch on the opening circuit but Nelson
swung around the outside and took the lead off the fourth
turn, Hart was second with Duane Dale, Justin Jones, Tim
Alexander and Bob Broking trailing.
The first of three caution flags appeared when Jeff Wood
went for a spin in turn four with two laps in. The second
caution flag followed two laps later when Scott Hudack spun
off turn four into the infield. Nelson pulled the same
maneuver as on the first lap and took the point with Hart
hot on his heels along with Jones in third. It was apparent
early on thet there were going to be "comers and goers" in
the event as Paul Schultz who had started ninth was running
in the fourth spot just ahead of Bill Byholm. Sixteenth
starting Jim Chyba was sixth and 20th starting Kelly Estey
was already up to seventh. The laps rolled by with Nelson
widening his lead over Hart while Estey continued to storm
toward the front and was now fifth. The mid-point was
quickly reached as Nelson and Hart in turn started lapping
the field. Just past half way Estey was now third with Jones
fourth and Schultz hanging on to fifth.
The final caution flag flew when Estey was trying to pass
Hart for second in the first turn and the two clashed
damaging Estey's front suspension and right front tire. The
incident occurred as they were trying to lap Ricky Roche who
was forced spinning off the first turn bringing out the
caution. As the restart lineup was being sorted out, Estey
appeared to run into Hart's stationary car and then got out
of his car. This action earned him a disqualification from
the event. When everything settled down with eight laps to
go Nelson was again the class of the field and went on to
take the win worth $1000. Hart, Jacobsen, with a remarkable
run from 22nd to third, Schultz and Chyba finished in the
top five.
Kelly Estey won the WISSOTA Late Model 20 lap main event
from the pole in Bob Reed's number 41. Estey took of like a
shot at the green flag with Kyle Peterlin second ahead of
another young driver Jeff Massingill with father and son
Terry and Aaron Lillo in the top five. The first of three
caution flags flew when Todd Gehl spun in turn three
collecting Harry Hanson and Darrell Carlson. Gehl was
charged with the incident and sent to the rear. Estey led
off at the restart shadowed by Peterlin, Massingill, Terry
Lillo and Nick Musel who had moved to fifth. The laps flew
by without incident as Jeff Provinzino was moving forward
from his fifth row starting spot and, as the half way mark
was reached, had moved past Musel into fourth. Aaron Lillo,
Steve Vesel, Tim McMann, Caley Emerson and Hanson were in
the top ten.
The second caution flag flew as Estey began to put al lap
on the back markers. Doug Koski spun in turn one and brought
proceedings to a halt. With eight laps remaining the restart
order stood at Estey out front, Peterlin Second, Provinzino
now third, Massingill with a death grip on fourth and Musel
fifth. Less than half a lap after Provinzino had wrestled
second away from Peterlin, the caution flag flew for an
Emerson spin in turn four giving back second to the rookie
Late Model driver. Estey romped to the easy win after the
restart and Peterlin was able to hold off Provinzino for
second Massingill and Musel rounded out the top five.
Darin Meierotto led most of the way from the pole in the
20 lap WISSOTA Super Stock feature. He got a quick start at
the initial green flag and motored away from Butch Butcher,
Jay Kuras, Tom Treviranus, John Copp and Jeff Tardy. While
the leading cars were mostly single file there was some
great three wide racing from mid pack on back. Most of that
played out in a few laps and the cars began to get strung
out around the track. The top four cars were each separated
from one another by eight to ten car lengths while further
back defending WISSOTA National Champion Ryan Aho was
inching forward after having to qualify through a B Main. He
was up the eighth from his 16th starting spot as the laps
wore on.
Just prior to the ten lap mark, Treviranus spun off turn
two bringing out the inevitable caution flag which bunched
up the field. The restart was foiled when a tangle between
Jay Kuras, Sam Skalsky and Scott Lawrence stopped the
action. Kuras was tagged with the incident. The next try at
a restart stuttered to a halt when Art Hyde's car
experienced problems in the first turn and pushed Lawrence
off the track. Hyde was off on the hook and Lawrence was
restored to his position. Meierotto got a good restart but
Butcher was pushing hard for the lead while Tardy watched
form third. Just a bit back from them Aho and Lawrence ran
door to door for fourth. Butcher made a strong move on
Meierotto and grabbed the lead cruising the high groove the
rest of the way for his first ever win at the speedway.
Meirotto held on for second with Tardy third as Lawrence
held off Aho for fourth.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modified 20 lap main event got off to
a bad start as Randy Vezina sailed off turn three and
collided with the guard rail. When the event finally went
under the green flag pole sitter Deven Van House led Jesse
Ogston, Al McDougall, Skeeter Estey and Mark Kangas. Coming
quickly forward was Greg Chesley who moved into the third
spot in the early going.
The caution flag flew when John Sertich spun in turn four
with five laps complete. Kangas got a great jump off turn
two and took the lead with Chesley to second, Van House
third, Estey fourth, and Nick Lavato up to fifth. Charging
to ward the front was Chad Larson who was ninth after
starting 17th. At the mid point Kangas led Van House,
Chesley, Estey and Lavato in the top five followed by Chais
Eliason, McDougall, Ogston, Larson and Loren Inman.
With six laps remaining Jeremy Hall encountered trouble
and looped on the back stretch bringing out the final
caution flag. Kangas led off on the restart ahead of Van
House and Chesley while Estey went to the high side letting
Lavato nip by for fourth which is the way they finished.
Tony Ciurleo raced off from the pole position to a
substantial lead in the 15 lap Pure Stock feature followed
by Richard Dezlak, Dan Larsen, Troy Wiseth, and Jon
McKinnon. Ciurleo raced off to a huge lead over Larsen who
had taken second leaving Dezlak and McKinnon to duke it out
for third. The event was humming along with no caution flags
and half way through Ciurleo was way out in front with
McKinnon now second, Larsen third, Dezlak fourth and Wiseth
fifth. Starting to make his move was Glen Dammer and finally
worked his way to the second spot. With no caution periods
to bunch the pack Dammer could get no closer to Ciurleo than
ten or fifteen car lengths before the checkered flag flew.
Dammer, McKinnon, Dan Larsen and Wiseth finished in the top
five.
