Nick Lavato overcame four caution flags to win the
Midwest Modified 20 lap feature Sunday night at the
Proctor Speedway. As the Late Model Feature attempted to
get in the first lap of the 20 lap feature, the Heavens
opened and poured down rain washing out the rest of the
racing program.
Willy Thompson started to feature from the pole
position and streaked into the lead at the green flag.
Clint Larson fell into second ahead of twin brother Chad
with Adam Archer and Nick Lavato following. Charging
forward from the fifth row was Greg Chesley and he and
Chad Larson tangled in turn four. Chesley went to the pits
for a tire change while Larson was charged with the
incident. Thompson led off at the green but Clint Larson
raced alongside and nosed into the lead at the line.
Racing did not last too long as the next time around there
was a massive tangle in turn four near the back of the
field bringing out the caution flag once again. All cars
drove away from the incident.
This time when the green flag appeared Larson jumped
into the point with Thompson, Lavato, Loren Inman from the
sixth row and Mark Kangas in the top five. Archer, who was
running toward the front, slipped back to 11th. Yeat
another caution flag flew when Kylie Abrahamson spun in
turn four with 14 laps remaining. This time at the green
Thompson was ready and again took the lead over Larson as
Lavato and Inman made it a four car race for the lead.
What would prove to be the final caution flag flew when
the racing for the lead became a little too intense. It
appeared that Inman and Thompson got too close and
Thompson's front bumper got tangled with Inman's rear
bumper sending both cars off the top of the track at
the exit of turn two. Both cars were too damaged to
continue.
It was a single file restart with Larson in the lead
and Lavato and Kangas , Skeeter Estey and Jeremy Hall in
the top five. Hall had made an amazing drive to the top
five from the 17th starting spot. At the green Lavato
dived to the low groove and drew alongside Larson but
Larson was able to retain the lead by powering off the
high side of turn four. The next time by the tactic worked
for Lavato and he was able to slide up in front of Larson
to take the lead. At the half way point Lavato led with
Larson, Estey, Kangas and Hall in the top five. Behind the
top five was Deven VanHouse up from 14th, Nick Baker from
13th, E J Hietala, and the pair who caused the second
caution period Chesley and Chad Larson. Lavato ran of to a
huge lead as the race continued to the end with no more
caution flags. On the final lap it looked as though
Skeeter Estey had locked up a top three finish but spun
off turn four and recovered to finish 7th. Larson, Kangas,
Hall and VanHouse rounded out the top five.
Make up features in the other four classes will be
announced at a later time.
