JEFF BROKING ON TOP OF PROCTOR LATE MODEL FEATURE
Provinzino And Tardy Win Make Up Features
By Jerry O'Brien
6-24-07

The plate was full to overflowing Sunday night at the Proctor Speedway with a full five class slate of racing scheduled as well two make up features for the WISSOTA Super Stocks and Late Models from two weeks previously. To top it all off it was also Kid's Night and Meet The Drivers Night. Despite the kid's nigh activities, the first make up feature took the green flag at exactly 5:30 p.m. the normal scheduled start time. For once the hot and sunny weather greeted the large crowd and the 125 cars in attendance.

The first make up feature was for the WISSOTA Super Stocks with Kevin Eder and Dave Flynn leading the 17 returning Super Stocks to the green flag. Eder took himself out of the early battle for the race lead by slipping off turn one. By the time he got back on the track he was in last place. Ryan Aho and Jeff Tardy clashed in turn one with Aho sent to the back. Tardy challenged Flynn on the restart and finally made the pass stick. Derrick Vesel was third ahead of a battle between Andy Davey and Butch Butcher. At the half way mark in the 20 lap event Tardy led Flynn, Vesel, Davey and Butcher. The caution flag flew when Flynn and Davey clashed off turn four with Flynn out and Davey able to continue. From then on Tardy ran away with the race until the pack caught up when Dave Reynolds spun in turn four and it was a two lap dash to the flag with Tardy taking the win. Aho raced his way back to second with Vesel third and Jay Kuras fourth up from his 14th starting spot and Butcher in fifth.

The second make up feature was for the WISSOTA Late Models and all 21 cars scheduled to race were on the track. Tim McMann got the jump at the green but the start did not stick as Nick Musel and Joey Ogston crashed together off the back stretch. The next time it was Todd Gehl who got the jump on McMann who led Jeff Provinzino, John Massingill and Darrell Nelson. The race ran to just past half way with Gehl leading Provinzino, McMann, Massingill and Nelson when the second of three caution flags waved when Terry Lillo and Kevin Carlson clashed putting Carlson out with apparent front suspension damage. The restart saw Gehl holding off Provinzino and Massingill but the final caution flag flew when Dave Esse got turned around in turn four. Gehl continued to lead but Provinzino took the low road off turn four as he grabbed the lead and the win. Gehl, Nelson, McMann and Danny Young from the 8th row finished in the top five.

The regular weekly program started immediately after the smoke cleared form the make up feature. Qualifying heats and B features were run with some surprising results that put some new names at the front of some of the features. The first feature was for the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Barry Smith and Adam Archer led the 24 car field to the green flag as Smith got the lead and Archer had some trouble and fell back in the scramble. Deven VanHouse got a good run and slipped into the lead but Brock McCarthy and Andrew Inman tangled bringing out the caution flag. During the restart Al McDougall and Mark Kangas clashed, and though there was no caution flag , McDougall dropped out and Kangas dropped back. The battle for the lead developed between VanHouse and Smith until, with six of 20 laps in E J Hietala and Loren Inman crashed in turn one. At the green flag Skeeter Estey and Clint Larson got the jump on the leaders and took over the top two spots but that didn't last as Tom Morinville and Loren Inman tangled in turn four.

The restart was with 13 laps to go but this one also did not last when Jeremy Hall and Taylor Leuthner tangled in turn two. This incident whittled the field down to 13 cars from the original 24 and at the mid point Smith led VanHouse, Estey Nick Lavato and Greg Chesley. Smith and VanHouse but on a show with a wheel to wheel battle which was interrupted Andrew Inman spun off turn two and the field was down to less than half of the starters. The event went the final seven laps without interruption with Smith edging out VanHouse for his first career feature win.

As is the case more often than not, the WISSOTA Super Stock 20 lap feature came down with a bad case of yellow fever. The incidents occurred so frequently that officials were forced to cut laps as the time limit neared. This feature saw some new faces in the first two rows as Gary Cornelison and Ronnie Malecki paced the field with Dave Reynolds in the second row. When all was said and done, Derrick Vesel held off a charging Ryan Aho to pick up the feature win. Jeff Tardy had another good run to finish third ahead of Butch Butcher and Jeremy Fink. Malecki was the best finisher of the new names with a ninth place finish.

Next up was the WISSOTA Late Model feature with another new to the pole position name as Brian Taylor and Jeff Broking paced the 22 car field. Tim McMann showed he can still race as he and Broking battled for the lead early on in the 20 lap event. The usual "hot dogs" were buried deep in the field until Darrell Nelson broke free into sixth. The only caution flag of the race flew when Jeff Massingill slid off the third turn with seven laps in. Broking maintained the lead at the restart with Kevin Carlson capturing second over McMann. At the mid point of the event Broking had several car lengths over Carlson, McMann, Danny Young and Nelson. McMann used all his skill to hang onto third but Young squeezed by for the position. Todd Gehl outgunned Nelson for the fifth spot. It was a great victory for Broking who is racing with a very sore right leg that was operated on last winter to repair problems from a logging accident several years ago.

Kelly Estey added another victory to his resume of wins at the Proctor Speedway. Jad Carlson hat he pole and the early lead over Jody Bellefeuille and Duane Dale with Estey to fifth. Bellefeuille's machine suffered a flat tire which caused him to spin in turn one. When racing resumed Estey used the high side to sweep into the lead but the "Yellow Fever" affliction seemed to strike the Modifieds also as Travis Zollar looped his car and then, on the next attempt, Carlson spun in turn four taking a hit from Justin Jones. At the green flag Estey had the lead over Paul Schultz and Darrell Nelson who soon took second from Schultz. Yet another caution flag flew when Rick Cannata slipped off turn four.

This time the restart was single file with Estey leading Nelson, Schultz, Dale and Jeff Wood. Jeff Hart ran in the sixth spot after starting 17th. Estey was cruising in the lead while Nelson tried several different lines in an effort to track down Estey but to no avail. The finish saw Estey over Nelson, Schultz, Wood and Don Copp in the top five.

Al Rapp found his way back to the winner's circle for the first time this season. Starting on the outside of the front row Rapp hooked up and took the lead at the green flag over Jon McKinnon and Dan Larsen. Glen Dammer was marching forward from the fifth row and ran fourth ahead of LaRae Ralidak in fifth. The race ran flawlessly with no caution periods from start to finish. Half way through the top five were the same and, though there were several close calls for Rapp in lapped traffic, he was able to hold off McKinnon who was glued to his back bumper. Dan Larsen finished third ahead of Dammer and Ralidak who was fresh off a feature win the previous evening.
