LaRae Ralidak Becomes First Female Driver to Win
A Feature At The Speedway
After the qualifying heats and B Features
were completed on a hot and steamy night at the
Proctor Speedway, it was time for the five
feature events. First up was the WISSOTA Midwest
Modified event starting 20 cars. The first lap
under green was waved off for a spinning car.
When the green flag waved for good it was pole
sitter Jimmy Latvala to the lead over Clint
Larson, Skeeter Estey, Deven VanHouse and Mark
Kangas but VanHouse spun out of the top five on
the second go round though there was no caution
flag until VanHouse rolled to a stop on the back
stretch. VanHouse was sent to the pits for
apparently intentionally stopping the race and
during this stoppage Nick Lavato headed to the
pits with a flat tire and rejoined the field at
the tail. |

With three laps complete the restart saw Larson on
the point ahead of Latvala and Kangas but Kangas shot
through and grabbed the lead off turn four. The racing
went under the green flag for several laps as Lavato
proved to be the fast mover arriving in the top five
eventually taking over the third spot. Estey, Latvala
and Greg Chesley battled for fourth and Estey broke
free to overtake Lavato for third. As the mid point
was reached the order stood at Kangas with the lead
over Larson, Estey, Lavato and Latvala with Chesley, E
J Hietala, Joe Olson, Jesse Ogston and Adam Archer in
the top ten.
The third caution period occurred when Olson spun
in turn two on lap 13. At the green flag it was a
tight battle between Kangas, Larson and Estey for the
lead but the fourth and final caution flag appeared
for Chesley who stalled off the back stretch. It was a
single file restart with Kangas leading Estey, Larson,
Lavato and Latvala. This restart was also waved off as
there was a tangle in turn one that left Larson
crossways in the first turn. Lavato was charged and
sent to the rear as the restart would begin a two lap
shootout between Kangas and Estey. Off the final turn
Kangas was on the outside of turn four and Estey
appeared to slide up into him on the slick track
pushing Kangas into the wall with heavy front end
damage. For the second time this season a driver
appeared in the winner's circle as Kangas was awarded
the win and Estey was disqualified. Rounding out the
top five in second was Larson who's car was also
heavily damaged in the incident, Latvala, Hietala and
Archer.
Next up was the 25 lap feature for the WISSOTA Late
Models. At the green flag pole starter Todd Gehl
played Hare to the Hounds as he drove off to a several
car length lead on the in initial circuit. An incident
on the back stretch negated the great start, however,
as Jeff Provinzino, Danny Young and Harry Hanson went
three wide with Hanson running out of room and
spinning off the back stretch. The incident was
apparently deemed a racing incident and everyone
realigned in their original positions.
At the green flag it was three wide for the lead
with Young coming through from row two to grab the
lead as Provinzino went to second. The two raced wheel
to wheel with Young upstairs and Provinzino in the
basement. Provinzino could draw ahead on the straights
but Young was able to keep the lead with the upper
groove momentum. Provinzino edged ahead and seemed
about to clear Young but Gehl stalled at the top of
turn four bringing out the first caution flag. At the
restart Young and Provinzino continued their battle as
Nelson, John Massingill and Hanson skirmished for
third. As the event neared the half way point the last
caution flag appeared as Aaron Lillo and Jeff
Massingill tangled in turn one.
At the green flag Young retained the advantage as
the mid point was reached. Nelson, Hanson and
Massingill were running top five while Kyle Peterlin,
Jeff Broking, Caley Emerson and Nick Musel trailed.
Young took a clear advantage over Provinzino and moved
down to the middle of the track. Hanson moved to third
over Massingill and Peterlin got past Nelson into the
top five. As the laps reeled off, Young dived to the
low groove to block Provinzino for the win, his first
of the season. Provinzino, Hanson John Massingill and
Peterlin finished in the top five.
The WISSOTA Super Stock feature started off with
Jeremy Fink taking the early lead from the pole as
outside pole sitter Jay Kuras slipped in behind and
ahead of Louis Meglen and Bob Kintner. Kuras edged
ahead of Fink for the lead and had a clear advantage
as the top six separated from the pack. Ninth starting
Ryan Aho quickly moved to fifth getting by Bob Kintner
and Fink and soon got into second as no caution flags
marred the first half of the 20 lap main event. The
top five at the mid point were Kuras, Aho, Bob Kintner,
Fink and Eric Nelson. Aho hounded Kuras for the lead,
got by and drove off to a several car length lead
which he held to the checkered flag. Aho won his third
feature of the season at the speedway over Kuras, Bob
Kintner, Fink and Nelson in an event that went it's
entire length without a caution flag.
There seemed to be a lot of pushing and shoving at
the beginning of the 20 lap WISSOTA Modified feature
as Jody Bellefeuille shot from the pack to the early
lead but the caution flag appeared for a safety issue
as Kelly Estey's car lost the fuel cell filler cap and
he was sent to the pits for a replacement which put
him at the back of the 15 car field for the restart.
The restart was waved off once again as Travis Zollar
spun in turn two. At the green flag Bellefeuille again
stole the lead as Jeff Wood popped out of the pack to
second with Darrell Nelson to third. Meanwhile Estey
was on a mission and was already up to seventh place,
while Nelson got past Wood for second and Wood fell
back into the clutches of Duane Dale in a battle for
third as Don Copp took over fifth. Another caution
flag slowed the action as Jeff Hart was banished to
the back of the pack.
At the green flag Nelson got the jump on
Bellefeuille and Estey shot into third then got by
Bellefeuille for third. It was a tight battle for
fourth with Wood, Copp, Jayme Lautigar, Justin Jones
and Dale battling for position. Nelson outran Estey
for his fourth feature win of the season as
Bellefeuille, Wood and Copp rounded out the top
five.
LaRae Ralidak of Meadowlands, MN became the first
female racer to win a regular feature at the Proctor
Speedway. Pete Ciurleo led off from the pole but Dan
Larsen and Ralidak battled him for the point. Ralidak
drove between them to take the lead as Larsen, Al
Rapp, Glen Dammer and Ciurleo skirmished for position.
Rapp took second from Larsen and Ciurleo bobbled in
turn four regaining control after losing several
positions. At the half way point Ralidak led Rapp,
Larsen, Dammer and Rick Kesty.
Ralidak continued to pull away from Rapp as the
laps proceeded without a caution flag. Ralidak was
very smooth and it looked as though an easy win was
going to be the result. Just to make it interesting,
Don Follett spun in turn one in front of the leaders
but kept the wheels turning and got out of the way.
Ralidak went on to take the win over Rapp, Larsen,
Kesty and Dammer.
Next up on the Proctor Speedway
schedule is the annual Twin Ports Twin 25's presented
by AMSOIL with a possible $4000 to win for the Late
Models.
