Features
A total of 45 WISSOTA Late Models were on hand at
the Proctor Speedway Sunday night August 5 for the
third annual Twin Ports Twin 25's along with 30
WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and 31 Proctor Pure Stocks
as support classes. The event for Late Models has twin
25 lap features each paying $1500to win. After the
first feature the winner picks from 10 frizbees placed
on the front stretch to determine the inversion of the
starting lineup for the next 25 lap event. The
inversion is no less than 10 nor more than 18. First
feature winner Steve Laursen of Cumberland, WI picked
15 which put Keewatin Minn's John Massingill on the
pole. |

Uncle and Nephew formed the first row for the
initial 25 lap feature with Duane Mahder to the
inside of nephew Chad Mahder. At the green flag
Duane Mahder took the early lead with Steve Laursen
up from row two into second ahead of Don Copp, Caley
Emerson and Darrell Nelson. A quick caution flag
flew for John Massingill and Todd Gehl who went off
track. Massingill was charged and sent to the rear.
With a single circuit complete, Laursen got the drop
on D Mahder as Copp and Emerson dueled for third and
Jeff Provinzino and Pat Doar battled for fifth.
Provinzino was on a mission and charged up to fourth
and Doar was fifth after starting 13th. With four
laps in the caution flag again flew for Kevin
Carlson and Laursen chose to restart on the outside
.
Laursen quickly asserted himself at the front
with D Mahder, Provinzino, Emerson and Copp
following. Copp and Doar again battled for a top
five spot but caution flag number three quickly
followed when Steve Vesel sailed off turn three.
When racing resumed Laursen led off with Provinzino
restarting second while Emerson challenged D Mahder
for fourth and Doar made the move to fifth. Copp
dropped into a battle for sixth with Darrell Nelson.
At the half way point the order stood at Laursen
with the lead over Provinzino, D Mahder, Emerson and
Doar in the top five. Copp, Nelson, Mitch Johnson,
Kelly Estey and Todd Gehl ran in the top ten. No
more caution periods slowed the action the rest of
the way as Laursen caught the tail of the field and
began lapping slower cars with little trouble as he
won the first of the two 25 lap features.
Provinzino; D Mahder, Emerson and Doar maintained
their top five positions to the finish.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modified and Proctor Pure
stock features were run between the two Late Model
features in order to give the drivers a chance to
work on their cars prior to the finale. The 15 car
inversion of the finish in the first Late Model
feature put 15th place John Massingill on the pole
with Aaron Lillo on the outside. The winner of the
first feature Laursen lined up deep in the pack in
the 15th position in row eight. As the second 25 lap
event started later in the evening, the track
conditions were markedly different than the first
feature with the surface more tacky in the early
going.
At the green flag pole sitter Massingill took the
lead and immediately went upstairs in the high
groove while Chad Mahder got by Lillo into second
and he and Massingill battled for the lead with
Gehl, Lillo and John Kaanta trailing. Kaanta was
trying to hold off Ron Schreiner for the fifth spot
but the first caution flag appeared when Emerson
went over the edge in turn three.
Massingill chose the outside for the restart and
again found the momentum would keep him ahead of C
Mahder while Gehl was third, Kaanta fourth and
Schreiner fifth. The top four runners were single
file at this point but again the caution flag flew
when Duane Mahder stalled just off turn four.
Massingill was able to maintain the lead on the
restart but the caution lights blinked on when Copp
pulled off the track off the top of turn three and
needed the hook to get to the pits.
On the restart with seven laps complete, C Mahder
got the jump on Massingill but the lap was not
complete as the caution flag again waved when Kevin
Carlson and Dave Esse clashed off turn two. The
restart was single file with Massingill and Mahder
in the top two spots and Kaanta grabbed third from
Gehl. Gehl fought back and grabbed third but again
the caution flag appeared when Estey and Lillo
crashed, Estey was tagged with the caution and
pulled off.
Fifteen laps remained when the green flag
appeared and Massingill was able to maintain his
edge as C Mahder tried too hard off turn four and
fell back by several car lengths. Just prior to the
midpoint of the event the caution flag again flew
for Danny Young who tangled with Steve Vesel off the
back stretch and went off with a flat tire. At the
Half way point it was Massingill with several car
lengths over C Mahder, Gehl, Kaanta and
Nelson.
With 18 of 24 starters still running the field
became strung out around the speedway but, of course
that wouldn't last as George Ledin appeared to spin
in turn four and Kevin Carlson ran over the front of
the stationary car. Both were finished for the
event. That would prove to be the final caution
period as Massingill led the 15 survivors under the
checkered flag for the $1500 win. Outside pole
sitter Lillo made a strong charge in the waning laps
to get back up to a sixth place finish. The top five
behind Massingill included C Mahder, Gehl; Kaaanta
and Nelson.
Jeff Provinzino was the winner of the Powers
& Associates $500 bonus for the best over all
finishes in the two features with a second and an
eighth. The non qualifier fund put up by Powers
& Associates and several other individuals and
businesses paid each driver who did not qualify for
the features in the Late Models $180 each.
Greg Chesley got back to his winning ways as he
won the 20 lap 20 car WISSOTA Midwest Modified
feature. E J Hietala looked as though he might get
his first ever Midwest Modified feature win as he
looked strong in the lead past the ten lap mid
point, but just after the first caution flag, while
running the high momentum groove, slipped off the
track in the first turn and regained control in
sixth. The bobble left Chesley with the lead and,
despite another caution flag, he was able to cruise
to the win over Deven Van House. Hietala was able to
regain some positions to finish third ahead of Clint
Larson and Justin Jones in the top five.
It was a rough night for Pure Stock driver Ashley
Smith as the pole sitter brought out the red flag
when she slipped off the top of turn one just at the
half way point and rolled at least twice. She was
uninjured in the incident but finished for the
night. Jon McKinnon started the 15 lap event from
inside row eight and raced his way past Smith at the
mid point and was leading when the red flag for the
Smith incident flew. Glen Dammer finished second
after having been banished to the rear of the pack
for causing a caution flag, Andrew LaBarge came from
mid pack to finish third, Tony Ciurleo was fourth
and Jeremy Fink drove up from the 9th row to round
out the top five.
