Peterlin was equal to the task and took the lead
but Hanson was dogged in pursuit. There were two
distinct grooves on the track with Peterlin down in
the basement looking for traction and Hanson upstairs
using the momentum to try and gain on Peterlin.
Further back in the pack Darrell Nelson, Jeff
Provinzino, Aaron Lillo and Tim McMann battled for
position. Back up front Hanson's run high on the track
was beginning to pay off as little by little he began
to draw alongside Peterlin on the straights and edge
ahead on the back stretch only to see Peterlin get the
better run off the bottom of turn four and lead to the
line. On the final circuit Hanson got a car length off
the back stretch and the two were side by side down
the front stretch to the checkered flag. Such a close
finish has not been seen at the speedway since Tom
Waseleski eked out a win over Pat Doar in the Silver
1000. There was silence and both cars headed toward
Victory Lane until the call was made and Hanson was
awarded the win by mere inches in the thrilling
finish. Hanson, a 30 year racing veteran gave Peterlin
a lot of credit for a great clean race. "The
kid's teaching me a few things out there" Hanson
said in his interview. "I thought I had him there
at the end but I wasn't sure". Rounding out the
top five was Darrell Nelson, Jeff Provinzino and Don
Copp.
Jayme Lautigar of Superior started the 20 lap
WISSOTA Modified feature from the pole and led every
lap for his first ever Modified feature win at the
Speedway. Nick Nelson started alongside and ran second
for most of the non stopped event until he was
overtaken by Don Copp in the closing laps. Copp had
come from the fourth row and worked his way past
Darrell Nelson, Paul Schultz and Jeff Wood to third
and then took down Nick Nelson for second. D Nelson
and Shultz rounded out the top five. Finishing sixth
through tenth was Duane Dale, Wood, Kelly Estey, Jody
Bellefeuille and Justin Jones.
Mike Bellefeuille was the Hare to the Hounds in the
early going in the WISSOTA Super Stock 20 lap feature.
Bellefeuille made a bold move from the second row to
split early leaders Kevin Salin and Dustin Lunde off
the second turn and drive away from the pack to the
lead. Ryan Aho was on the move from the fifth row and
was patiently working his way toward the front
arriving in second place simultaneously with the half
way mark and the first of two caution flags occurred
two laps later when Ronnie Malecki, Steve Estey and
Tom Treviranus tangled in the first turn.
At the green flag Aho and third running Jeff Tardy
ganged up on Bellefeuille but he was able to hold them
off until the final caution flag a couple of laps
later. This time Aho was too strong for Bellefeuille
and went by for the lead. Bellefeuille soon fell to
Tardy for second and Aho went on to take his sixth
feature win at the speedway and fourth in four days as
he solidified his hold not only on track points but
National WISSOTA points as well. Rounding out the top
five were super Stock rookie Kevin Eder and, another
strong run for Jay Kuras in fifth.
Mark Kangas got the jump on the field from the pole
in the 20 lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Willy
Thompson, Greg Chesley, Adam Archer and Nick Lavato
trailed behind. Chesley got into second and a caution
flag put him even with Kangas. The two went door to
door at the restart with Chesley taking over the top
spot. Chesley was cruising out front of Kangas who
could not make up any ground while further back Monty
Hall was coming forward like gang busters battling
from the fourth row into the top five. The final
caution flag flew when Thompson who was battling with
several cars for position ran out of real estate and
went off turn three.
At the restart, with five laps remaining Hall moved
to third and got past Kangas for second. Chesley went
on to win feature number four on the season. Hall,
Kangas, Nick Lavato and Adam Archer finished in the
top five. Jon McKinnon won his second Pure Stock
feature in a row coming again from deep in the pack
starting in row number five. Tony Ciurleo and Jeff
Tormondson paced the field early in the 15 lap event
but McKinnon kept chipping away, working his way
through the pack. At the half way point in the non
stopped affair, Tony Ciurleo and Rick Kesty had
McKinnon to deal with in third ahead of Al Rapp and
Tormondson in the top five.
Kesty and McKinnon ganged up on Ciurleo with Kesty
diving to the bottom and McKinnon on the top shelf.
McKinnon grabbed the lead and Kesty went to second but
couldn't get away from a stubborn Ciurleo as the race
ended with McKinnon the victor. Kesty, T Ciurleo,
Rapp, Dan Larsen and Tormondson were the first six
across the stripe, but the rest of the finish payoff
was held up pending results of a tear down on the 79A
of Andrew LaBarge.
