PROVINZINO NELSON AHO CHESLEY McKINNON TAKE PROCTOR SEASONS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Seasons Champions were crowned Sunday night at the Proctor Speedway as the 2007 regular season came to a close. Winning titles were Jeff Provinzino in the AMSOIL WISSOTA Dirt Track Series division, his first track championship, Darrell Belson in the WISSOTA Modified division, Ryan Aho in the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Greg chesley in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and the racing Policeman Jon McKinnon was the Curtis Tire & Oil Pure Stock champion. After qualifying heats and B features whittled down the 115 cars into their various feature events, the first to take to the track was the Midwest Modifieds for their 20 lap feature. For the title contenders the first few circuits made it tough for them. On the first attempt at a start second place Nick Lavato who had a chance to catch leader Greg Chesley was hit in the rear and spun sideways resulting in Monty Hall running over his right front. The resulting broken ball joint put Lavato to a 22nd place finish and erased all hope of the championship.

Chesley had started on the inside of the fifth row and on the second attempt to start the event slipped off the back stretch and recovered in last place. Up front mark Kangas took the lead and battled with Jesse Ogston, Taylor Leuthner, Jimmy Latvala and Clint Larson. Meanwhile Chesley was charging through the field and at the caution at the half way point for the flat tire on the Lance Solem ride, restarted in 14th. Up front Ogston and Kangas were trading the lead until Ogston encountered a large marker tire and spun in turn two. Chesley had cracked the top ten and restarted in ninth with nine laps remaining and kept charging to finish fourth on the last lap. Kangas won his third feature of the season followed by Latvala, Larson, Chesley and Randy Vezina in the top five.

Next up was the WISSOTA Late Model 25 lap feature with Hibbing's Jeff Provinzino looking for his first ever Late Model championship. Provinzino held a 16 point lead on Darrell Nelson, not a completely insurmountable lead. It was an uncharacteristic first half for the 21 car field as three caution flags in the first half whittled the pack down to 13 cars running. When there was some actual racing early on it was Jeff Broking. Kyle Peterlin, Nelson and Provinzino battling for the lead. Peterlin got the point early on and then Broking took it back on the restart. The front bunch see sawed back and forth while last week's winner Harry Hanson used a combination of good driving and attrition to arrive in the top five. The race went the rest of the way to the checkered flag without a slow down and Broking came out on top for his first win of the season. Peterlin finished second with Hanson up to third. Don Copp driving the Johnny Johnson entry worked his way from the sixth row to fourth ahead of Provinzino the new track champion.

The WISSOTA Super Stock 20 lap feature had only a single caution period just past half way and it was Ryan Aho who came out on top. Aho had the track championship locked up prior to the start of the night's action and carried a 29 point lead over fellow Iron Ranger Jeff Tardy into the feature. He made sure of the title by racing his way from the 5th row to the lead sweeping past Tardy on the caution restart to the lead and the feature win. Tardy finished second ahead of Mike Bellefeuille, Jay Kintner and Jay Kuras in the top five. Early leader and pole starter Alan Hartel held onto a lose race car for an eighth place finish while outside front row starter Super Stock rookie Kevin Eder finished sixth. Aho won his third  feature of the season and second in a row.

Darrell Nelson started the 20 lap WISSOTA Modified feature from the fourth row and only needed to take the feature green flag to take home the title. Several new drivers were in the field testing the waters for the 35th annual Silver 1000 Como Modified event coming on Thursday August 30 including Kevin "Buzzy" Adams, Jeff Spacek, Shaun Kreyer and Bryan Nayes. Of those three Spacek had the best night with a feature win. Adams started from the pole and led the first couple of circuits until the first caution for a Jeff Wood spin into the infield. Spacek got the jump on the restart on the high side into the lead an accident with four laps in saw the #40 leave on the hook. At the green flag Spacek used the same maneuver to sweep into a lead he would not relinquish the rest of the way. Spacek raced out to a huge lead as last week's winner Jody Bellfeuile burst from the pack to second at the mid point with Justin Jones, Nelson and Kelly Estey in the top five. Two more caution flags slowed the action, the first for Jeff Wood's second incident and the final for a Travis Zollar who went off the back stretch with two laps remaining. Spacek raced to the win over Bellefeuille with Nelson third, Jones fourth and Estey fifth.

The final regular season feature was the Pure Stock 15 lap event. Jon McKinnon only needed to finish 23rd in the feature to wrap up the season's championship and since only 20 cars started, the title was his before he took the green flag. He had to qualify through one of the B features and did so. He raced his way up to 12th and took the track championship. At the start of the event several cars were duking it out for the lead. The bunch included Al Rapp, Rick Kesty, Matt Johnson, LaRae Ralidak, Pat Van Erta and Glen Dammer. Rapp eked out the lead over Kesty as Ralidak charged to third. Kesty took the lead after the first caution flag at the half way point with Rapp, Ralidak, Johnson and Van Ert in the top five. There was a second caution flag near the end and, on the restart, it was a mob scene at the front resulting in Kesty having a flat left rear tire. Rapp won the event over Dammer, Ralidak, Van Ert and pole sitter Pete Ciurleo who fell back early on but rebounded to finish fifth.
