Provinzino
had raced his way from row number seven to run in
the top five. Casey worked his way past Peterlin and
Provinzino into second and six circuits of green
flag racing occurred before the action was slowed
when Pat Doar spun off turn one and slammed into the
bank, heavily damaging
the #11. Doar was not injured in the incident.
At the restart
Anderson held on to the lead but had a determined
Casey all over his bumper and at the half way point
Provinzino was running third ahead of Peterlin and
Vesel while Rick Egersdorf, Estey, John Massingill,
Tom Waseleski and Steve Laursen ran in the rest of
the top ten. Just past half way the caution flag
again appeared when Hanson who was having an awful
time, again spun by himself this time in turn one.
At the restart with 19 of 26 starters still on
track, Anderson raced away to a stout lead as
Provinzino got by Casey into second. The long lead
disappeared when what would prove to be the final
caution period occurred when John Massingill's good
run went bad as he slid of the high side off turn
one. Anderson remained the class of the field the
rest of the way as Casey retrieved second from
Provinzino with Peterlin fourth in a battle with
Estey for the position. The field finally settled
down and went the remaining distance without another
slowdown. Anderson appeared to take the win over
Casey, Provinzino, Peterlin and Estey but the
victory did not make it past post race inspection as
the scrutiny showed issues with the intake manifold
on the #81 causing him to be disqualified and moving
everyone up one position which gave the win to Casey
over Provinzino, Peterlin, Estey and moved Steve
Vesel back into the top five.
It was 30 laps of
WISSOTA Modified competition at the 35th Annual
Silver 1000. At the start of the feature it was Dave
Cain out to the lead from the front row with
defending race champion Darrell Nelson ahead of
Duane Dale, Jeff Wood and Pat Doar in Bill Byholm's
backup car in the top five. Cain's lead soon
vanished as it was he who brought out the first of
six yellow flags as he slowed off the back stretch
and made it to the pits leaving the lead to Doar who
had gotten into second. From there, despite five
more caution periods that kept the field close, Doar
was able to hold off all comers to lead 22 of the 30
circuits and win his second Silver 1000 Modified
feature. Once the bumping and banging was sorted
out, Doar dominated the action and the final
circuits went unabated to the checkered flag. Kelly
Estey raced his way up to the runner up position
from the seventh row ahead of Nelson, Dale who led
seven laps and Jeff Spacek in the top five.
Race Notes: WISSOTA
Dirt Track Series Late Models: 41 cars were on hand,
three fewer than in 2006. Ten former Silver 1000
champions were in competition including defending
champion Darrell Nelson; Tom Waseleski, Sr.; Harry
Hanson; Pat Doar; Steve Laursen; John Kaanta; Jeff
Hinkemeyer; Joel Cryderman; Jeff Provinzino and Rick
Egersdorf. Nine past champions in the Late Model
division made the 40 lap feature and six finished.
Harry Hanson, Darrell Nelson and Pat Doar were the
three past champion DNF's. The only past champion
failing to make the feature was Joel Cryderman. Past
champions finished fourth (Provinzino); seventh, (Egersdorf);
ninth (Laursen); 10th (Kaanta) 11th (Hinkemeyer);
and 13th (Waseleski, Sr.)... Casey's winning Rocket
Chassis is sponsored by Arnie Ranta Motorsports and
Arnie's Sleds & Trailers. Modified driver Matt
Sorenson turned his first laps in a Late Model with
limited success recording a DNS in his heat and a
DNF in the B Feature. Kyle Peterlin of Hibbing is
the leading Rookie driver in the WISSOTA AMSOIL Dirt
Track Series National Point Standings. Sunday's 35th
annual Silver 1000 was sponsored by the Black Bear
Casino and Hotel.
The event was
conceived in 1972 and the first champion was Dave
Bjorge of Austin, MN. The
name "Silver 1000" comes from the fact
that in the formative years the top three finishers
were paid in actual Silver Dollars with the winner
taking home 1000 of them. Leon Plank, Rick Egersdorf
and Rick Aukland are the only men to win 3 Silver
1000's. Jeff Hinkemeyer (81-82), Rick Aukland
(88-89); John Kaanta (2003-04) have all won Silver
1000 events back to back. Darrell Nelson is the only
driver to win both the Late Model feature and the
Modified feature at the Silver 1000 in one night.
There is a traveling trophy that winners get to keep
for one year and if the driver could win the Silver
1000 on three occasions the trophy would be retired
to that driver. Leon Plank; Rick Aukland and Rick
Egersdorf have all made the speedway build a new
traveling trophy.
