ESTEY TOPS COMO MODIFIED SERIES 30 LAP FEATURE By Jerry O'Brien 5-25-08 Proctor, MN 2007 Como Modified Oil & Propane Modified Series champion Kelly Estey of Kelly Lake picked up where he left off last season, at the head of the class. Estey won the 30 lap feature with a pass on Modified rookie driver Ryan Aho after the only caution flag of the event which came on lap 23 when Dean Yrjanainen and Jody Bellefeuille who had taken the Como Provisionsl, clashed on the front straight. On the restart Estey who had been bottled up behind Bill Byholm, found clear track between himself and Aho. He took advantage and dived inside Aho in turn one and grabbed the lead off turn two and raced away leading the final circuits for a convincing win. 25 cars were scheduled to take the green flag for the 30 lap main event. After the pole dash, Estey and Jayme Lautigar who had finished first and second respectively in the ‘07 final Series points, shared the front row. At the start Estey and Lautigar were too close to call at the line for the lead on the first circuit but Estey quickly gained the point with Lautigar second ahead of Al Uotinen and Ryan Aho. The battle for fifth was between Joey Jensen and Jeff Wood. Estey extended his lead in the early going with Jensen winning out. The skirmish for second heated up as Lautigar, Uotinen and Aho battled with Aho going to the top groove and working his way past into the runner up spot. He then set out after the fleeing Estey who found himself battling through traffic at the rear of the pack. Aho caught Estey in a gaggle of lapped cars as the 15 lap half way point was reached. At that point the top ten included Estey in the lead over Aho, Lautigar, Uotinen, Jensen, Wood, Craig Thatcher, Darrell Nelson, Bill Byholm and Don Copp. On lap 16 Aho got to the outside of Estey in traffic on the back stretch and completed the pass on the front stretch. Aho was able to stretch his lead over Estey until the lap 23 incident when estey was able to return the favor going on for the win. Aho, Lautigar, Uotinen and Jensen completed the top five at the finish. A total of 42 WISSOTA AMSOIL Dirt Track Series Modified were on hand for the event. Harry Hanson nabbed his second straight WISSOTA Late Model feature at the Proctor Speedway Sunday night. Starting deep in the small 13 car field in the eighth starting slot, Hanson worked his way forward in the 25 lap event and took over the lead just before the half way point. At the green flag pole sitter Caley Emarson took the early lead over Tim McMann, Jeff Broking, Brian Taylor and Kevin Carlson. Hanson and Darrell Nelson were chasing the top five and Hanson soon began to pick them off going to fourth then passing Broking for third. McMann had taken the lead from Emerson but was no match for the charging Hanson who soon sailed past for the lead and ran away from the field until Broking's breakdown brought out the only caution flag of the event putting McMann back in contention. Hanson went on to take the win over McMAnn, Emerson, Nelson and John Massingill. The WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature got off to a rocky start with a caution flag right away when Bill Brouse took his #29B for a spin off turn one. At the green flag pole starter Brad Anderson led Monty Hall, Glen Dammer, Jimmy Latvala and Skeeter Estey in the front five. Hall worried at Anderson and finally made the pass for the lead as Latvala shot up into the third spot. Latvala pulled off a slide job on Anderson in the fourth turn and took over second. A lap later Dammer tapped Anderson spinning him in turn one which brought out caution flag number two. Hall pulled away from Latvala at the green with Estey third ahead of Anderson and Jesse Ogston. Charging up from the fifth row was the 97 of defending track champion Greg Chesley passing Ogston for fifth. At the half way point Hall had moved to nearly a straight away lead over Latvala and Estey. Chesley grabbed the fourth spot with Ogston fifth, then Anderson, Butch Butcher, E J Hietala, Nick Baker and Jeremy Houle in the top ten. Hall found himself in heavy traffic as did Latvala while Chesley tracked down Estey for the third spot. Hall won his first Midwest Modified feature of the season whith Latvala, Chesley, Estey and Ogston finishing in the top five. The 15 lap Pure Stock feature went flag to flag without a caution flag as Scott Larsen won his first feature in a long time. Defending track champion Jon McKinnon jumped into the lead from the pole ahead of Larsen and Matt Hammit. McKinnon and Larsen drove off from the field to settle it themselves and at the half way mark had a considerable margin on Tom Cornelison,Josh Loucks and Hammitt in the top five. Dan Follett, last week's winner Andrew LaBarge, Tim Carlson, Richard Dzelak and Paul Gucinski ran in the rest of the top ten. The leaders got to the back of the field and Larsen made the pass on McKinnon in traffic and had little trouble taking the win. McKinnon, Hammitt and Labarge finished in the top five.
