NELSON, LATVALA, AHO, BROWNELL, MEGLEN SNARE PROCTOR FEATURES By Jerry O'Brien 7-13-08 Proctor, MN Darrell Nelson drove a borrowed car to the win in the 25 lap Late Model feature Sunday night July 13. Nelson's only Late Model chassis was destroyed in a wreck Saturday night July 5 leaving him without a ride. His former car owner Tom Esse who is fielding a car for his son Dave, stepped in and offered the #21 to Nelson until such time that his new chassis could be completed. Nelson took to his old ride like a Duck to water and it was just a matter of time until he'd put it in victory circle. Another veteran driver Tim McMann who is in his 38th year of competition, was on the outside pole for the feature with Nelson starting from the ninth position. McMann took the lead from the get go but could never widen the distance on the pack as three caution flags in the early going kept the pack bunched. The third caution flag may have been McMann's undoing as while he was trying to get slowed down, he slid off the third turn into the car of Jeff Broking who had caused the yellow flag. After that McMann's car didn't seem to be the same and he relinquished the lead on the restart and hung on to finish fourth. Meanwhile Nelson was on the move and grabbed the lead with nine laps remaining outrunning last week's winner Jeff Provinzino for the win. Tom Waseleski, Jr finished third ahead of McMann while Kyle Peterlin's run from the eighth row ended in the fifth spot. It was Ryan Aho's feature to lose in the WISSOTA Modified 20 lap feature as he worked his way from the third row to slip by early leader pole sitter Jeff Hart. Hart led the early circuits but Aho was on the move. Early on perpetual contender Kelly Estey brought out the first caution flag and went to the work area with a flat tire rejoining the pack just as the green flag flew. While everyone watched Aho take over the lead from Hart, Estey was charging around the track from nearly a half lap back and reached the back of the pack just as the caution flag flew again. While Aho was having a battle with Jayme Lautigar for the lead, Estey was carving his way through the field finishing sixth. Aho held off Lautigar for the win and the sweep, his first in the Modified division at the speedway. Jody Bellefeuille was third with Darrell Nelson in contention up from row six to finish fourth ahead of Hart in fifth. Louis Meglen of Iron, MN won out in a race long battle with Ashland's Kevin Eder to win his first ever WISSOTA Super Stock feature at the speedway. The two started side by side in the front row and battled the entire distance. Several early cautions bunched the pack and gave Eder chances to get by Meglen. He was able to draw alongside numerous times but Meglen was able to fend him off. Behind the leaders the players in third changed several times as first Eric Nelson then Jeremy Fink as well as Mike Bellefeuille and Andy Davey took a shot at tracking down the front duo. at the end of the 20 laps it was Meglen out front over Eder, Fink, Nelson and Bellefeuille in the top five. Loren Inman started the 20 lap WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature from the outside pole and took the early lead but four caution flags foiled the attempt to get the first of 20 circuits in the books. Even a single file restart didn't help before the combatants settled down and began to race instead of crash. Jimmy Latvala started the feature from the inside of row three and hung around in the top five during the early going along with Glen Dammer, Nick Baker, and Clint Larson. Latvala got the jump on the restart after the fifth caution flag and drove away from Inman to take his first feature win at the speedway in 11 years. Inman, Monte Hall, Skeeter Estey and Adam Archer finished in the top five. Larson and Greg Chesley both rebounded from being tagged with cautions to finish sixth and seventh. Pole sitter Dan Kingsley finished eighth while other accident victims Lance Solem and Brad Anderson rounded out the top ten. Newcomer John Brownell from Hibbing, MN passed leader Josh Loucks after a restart with six laps remaining to win his first Pure Stock feature at the speedway. Brownell started from outside row five and worked his way into contention. After an early red flag when Jeff Christman flipped his car in turn three (he was OK) Loucks was right in pole sitter Pete Ciurleo's tire tracks. Loucks soon took the lead from Ciurleo and dominated for a few laps until Tim Carlson spun on the backstretch bringing out the caution flag again. At the green flag Brownell forced his way past Loucks and pulled away to t he victory. Loucks, Dan Follett, Ciurleo and Richard Dzelak rounded out the top five.
