HANSON AND DIEMEL TOP TWIN PORTS 25'S FEATURES

By Jerry O'Brien 7-27-08

Proctor, MN

The fourth annual Twin Ports Twin 25's special event held at the Proctor Speedway had to be

considered a rousing success. A stellar field of 42 WISSOTA AMSOIL Dirt Track Series Late

Models filled the pits at the Proctor Speedway in anticipation of competing in perhaps the only

Late Model special that ensures all competitors receive some money for their efforts. The event

was instigated by Duluth Optician Dr. Troy Powers an avid Late Model fan and Proctor

Speedway officials and features twin 25 lap features for the Late Models. There is also a Non-

Qualifiers fund from donations garnered by Dr. Powers. Each driver that fails to qualify for the

twin features is guaranteed a portion of that fund, an amount that varies in accordance with the

amount generated. This edition paid each non-qualifier $223 and there was also a fund that paid

$100 to the drivers with the longest tow to the track. Five drivers benefitted from this including

Pete Parker, Joel Cryderman, Tom Nesbitt, A. J. Diemel and Matt Aukland.

In the three previous years the event has been run, none of the 25 lap features has been won by

the same drive. There is a $1000 bonus to anyone who can do so. The fourth edition kept the

tradition alive as two new winners, Harry Hanson, Eveleth and Diemel won. Diemel also got the

best average finish money with a third place finish in the first feature to go along with the win in

the second.

There were five qualifying heat races with the top four in each making the cut for the features.

There were two B Features that advanced the top two into the features making a 24 car field for

each segment.

In the first 25 lap feature which paid $1500 to the winner, Harry Hanson started in row two

and was looking for the win but Kelly Esteygrabbed the point from outside the front row with

pole sitter Caley Emerson second. Hanson got by Emerson looked to get by Estey but a charging

Kyle Peterlin got by into second. Hanson rebounded, passed Peterlin and challenged Estey again

for the lead on the low side as Estey was rim riding the dangerous upper groove. Just as estey

reached the back of the pack, Hanson's low groove took him to the front. Estey's side running bit

him and he slipped off the top of turn four. By the time he got the car under control he had

slipped to fifth. Now it was Peterlin who was chasing Hanson through traffic. The first caution

flag flew with 20 laps complete setting up a five lap shoot out. Hanson had the point over

Peterlin at the green flag but charging forward were A. J. Diemel and Jeff Provinzino. Provinzino

got past Peterlin into second but ran out of laps and finished second. Diemel, Peterlin and Estey

rounded out the top five.

For the second 25 lap race, a blind draw using Frisbees numbered from two to 18 to set the

inversion placed on the front stretch. Hanson, as the first feature winner picked and the inversion

was 18 meaning Hanson would start outside the 9th row. The front row for the second feature put

Jeff Hinkemeyer on the pole flanked by Jeff Broking. Hinkemeyer got the jump on Broking at the

green flag with Joey Jensen, John Massingill and Tom Waseleski, Jr in the top five. Jensen

closed on Hinkemeyer and the two went wheel to wheel for several laps before Jensen eased

ahead. Hinkemeyer, John Massingill, Jason Miller and Joel Cryderman were in the top five.

Coming from row seven was Diemel as Miller passed Masingill for third and Cryderman moved

into fourth. At the half way point Jensen led Hinkemeyer, Miller and Cryderman as Darrell

Nelson moved into fifth. Only Massingill was between Diemel and Nelson as the first and only

caution flag appeared when Broking spun in turn two with 13 laps remaining. At the green

Hinkemeyer made a mad dash down into turn one trying to take Jensen for the lead but failed.

Jensen then pulled away and began a dominating run. Miller moved into second and Cryderman

was trying to hold off Diemel for fourth but could not. Diemel was headed to the front and blew

by Miller into second, closing in on Jensen. Jensen made an error and slipped off the top of turn

four just enough for Diemel to skate by just as the white flag appeared. Diemel completed yet

another improbable win over Jensen, Miller, Nelson and Cryderman. Mike Waseleski,

Hinkemeyer, Massingill, Jake Redetzke and Pat Doar finished in the top ten.

Also on the program were the WISSOTA AMSOIL Dirt Track Series Midwest Modifieds set

to do a 20 lap feature. Four caution flags slowed the action as Greg Chesley won yet another

main event coming from the fourth row to take the lead a just at the half way point. Clint Larson,

Jesse Ogston, Jimmy Latvala and E. J. Hietala finished in the top five.

LeRae Ralidak quickly moved into the lead from the second row and took advantage of some

heavy squabbling for position behind her to move out to a huge lead in the 15 lap Proctor Pure

Stock feature. By the time current point leader Andrew LaBarge broke free he could not track her

down in the remaining laps. He was able to close up to about eight or nine car lengths but could

get no closer as Ralidak won her first feature of this season to go along with her 2007 win. Al

Rapp, Josh Loucks and fellow Iron Ranger Kevin Burdick rounded out the top five.
